Sire P5 with rotosound flats
Iâm so happy that I got my Fullerton Fallout before the s**t hit the fan at G&L. Hereâs mine on the workbench in Fullerton, being prepped for shipping to me. Iâve forgotten what MFD (pickup) stands for, but to me, itâs Mother Fâing Dy-No-Mite!
EDIT: I searched. It stands for Magnetic Field Design. I like my definition better. ![]()
Love mine. Great bass!
Mine is a Tribute also, and the picture is a bit of an illusion because itâs looks light, but itâs not maple. Itâs not rosewood either, but some other tropical wood that is common for fretboards.
Looks pau ferro, a little oil will bring it back to life, pau ferro looks dry rather quickly.
It had quite a bit of what seemed like grey buffing compound on frets and fretboard when I purchased it from G&L.
Interesting (fretboard color).
Thanks for the info!
That has not been my experience with my Pau Ferro fretboards. I havenât added a drop of anything to mine in years and they look and feel great.
That doesnât look like Pau Ferro.
It appears to most likely be Indian Laurel.
Looks like a nice cleaning and oiling is in order. Some sort of substance is on there but isnât even. Almost looks like not enough oil. Maybe lighting though?
Cleaned it thoroughly when I took the Dâaddario strings off and put the Rotasound 77âs on. Blow the picture up and look more closely at the detail in the grain. What youâre seeing is some quality of the wood.
Ok, here are some better pictures taken in natural light, after a good oiling had time to soak into the fretboard. I am also going to say that perhaps I had made a mistake in assuming this isnât Rosewood, so, what I am saying is, I am making no assumptions on what it might or might not be. Thoughts?
I donât know what it is but itâs absolutely beautiful.
That is some type of figured wood. I doubt it is rosewood. Rosewood is usually pretty dark. Yours could be some type of figured maple. The oil makes it slightly darker.
From the research I could gather, G&L used this type of fretboard wood: Chechen (sometimes colloquially called Caribbean Rosewood, although it is not actually in the Rosewood family). Yours appears to be a cut of figured Chechen.
Here is one of many info pages that detail this woodâs characteristics:
YEP!! Closest match and highest probability! Thanks Mike, I was struggling to find that information.
Yeah, it certainly looks like a rosewood-like wood. Iâm no expert in fretboard woods. I know that the âshellackedâ maple-ish wood is not what I prefer.
Thanks for the additional photos. That is a beautiful wood!
No clue what kind of wood - but it is absolutely beautiful!!!
Yeah I really like it too, very pretty
