Show Us Your Basses (Part 2)

I had the Honey Burst. It’s quite spectacular. Well made, I betcha @sunDOG there’s no Fret sprout on yours either. I’ve not come across one with sprout from that era. Not ray34 and ray35.

I also had the Ray34CA of the same era, it’s quite awesome but I was in a mod mode so I modded.

If you are in a mod mode you can try this

I missed this by a couple of hours as GC had the last one bought the Amethyst sparkling instead.

I use to be happy with a couple of basses, then a couple of ops later I though sod it…

Now I have slightly more than a couple. Depending on what mood I’m in depends what I play on any paticular day, also some music sounds better on certain ones. My favorite and the one I gig with is usually the Ric or the Sterling. Got the Spector about a month ago, really liking the neck, its 16” radious that I find easy to play with my smallish arthritic hands… The Squires are the basic sonic versions, one with EMG Geezer butler pups and one converted to fretless. I use a Symour Duncan Powerstage 700 Bass amp and currently a Hratke Hydrive 4x10, got a Barefaced BB3 on the way, as the Hartke is getting a bit heavy to lug round these days (65 going on 165  ).

Love that Starcaster especially when it sits next to the slimmest Aerodyne.
how do you like it?

It feels strange playing it, as it is the only short scale bass I have. I am thinking of putting flats back on it as I did prefer the sound with flats, it is the nearest to a double bass with flats on I have heard from a bass. I picked it up for just over £200 UK sveral years ago, it has been a good investment. It was hanging up above the counter when I went for somthing else and it just said buy me.

No way!!! that’s such an awesome deal. I’m just worry about flats with that Mudbucker.

It had flats when I bought it, very deep sound, not a lot of brightness. Been using Ernie Ball 40-95 flats on my P- Bass, they are quite bright for flats and are not stiff like other flats I have tried, so I am pondering whether to try some on the Startcaster. As said though I don’t often play it, its a family heirloom now (my daughter has forbidden me to sell it…).

Whoa! that’s pretty skinny for flats. I have the last Fodera (rounds) set on my StarBass and I love it. It’s a 34" scale sitting next to my custom 23" scale

Check out what set put on his short scale Joe Dart, it’s in the 2805 flat family. very good and mid forward. It cuts through the mix really well.

Ray34 is absolutely the one I would get. Or would have except now there’s a Bongo.

Gustav does such good work! :+1:

I prefer them, they are easier to play I find, rather than 100/105’s. Less tension than the thicker ones, I had given up on flats until I found a couple of forum posts about the 95’s, so i gave them a try and love them. I have a broughton Audio Fliptop, the P bass with flats sounds nice through it.

I do not like the HH pickups on these though, they get in the way IMO, which is why i want to get rid of the BFR Dargie’s Delight. Maybe a 34 with only one pickup is the way to go for me vs. $$$$ EBMM

The front pickups would not bother me at all, I main picking

Now we know how @howard spends his spare time…pickin’ n grinnin’! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I love my 34. Feels great in the hands, and gets you about 90% of that classic Stingray tone for 1/3 or less of the price.

I listened to a lot of comparisons before buying one, and the Ray4 / SUB series is more like 60% of the way there. To my ear it’s completely missing the top-end zing that Stingrays are known for. They sound good, just not quite like a EBMM 'ray.

The HH is closer but still slightly further off, surprising considering they have the same bridge pickup in the same location. It’s maybe “close enough” but I avoided it because I wanted it for slapping, which I’m still not doing, but too many people say that neck pickup gets in the way.

That is the common thing people say but wtf does it get in the way of that a P or soapbar pickup wouldn’t, if you don’t slap

Even when i was typing it I was thinking this same thing, but, it does.
Def for slap which is one thing i was trying on it a lot.

But the chunkiness of the edges of the neck pickup is just a weird thing/feeling, and I am very flexible to feel things, they normally don’t bug me.

Snagged a near-mint SBV-500.

I also found a SBV-J2 that had spent its life as a case queen. It still has the plastic film on the pick guard! I’ll post pictures once it arrives.

Awesome score, except that is a J1, the J2 is the double P version…

That’s my new SBV-500. The J2 hasn’t arrived yet so I didn’t post a picture. I realize that my comment was confusing lol.
