A lot of the list really isn’t my thing. I don’t hate this one but it isn’t one I’d have picked for myself. I kinda want to work on these because of that though. When I find folks to play with, it isn’t always going to be playing stuff I love so this is good practice.

Hey guys!

Last week I started the 50 Songs challenge with this song. To be able to really track my progress, I decided to make 3 recordings for each song: 1st kinda immediately, showing the current skills. 2nd after one week of practice, 3rd after 2 weeks of practice (because that’s what the 50 songs in 100 weeks challenge essentially breaks down to).

So here’s the first recording, after practicing this song for 2 days, meaning like 20 playthroughs:

You’ll notice that my microtiming is off here and there, which I had not even noticed until I saw my own recording! Due to my bad cold I had catched, I could not play during the whole following week.

But still, I wanted to be true to myself and made the 2nd recording of this song and I came to a stunning conclusion, like: this is the ultimate proof that the brain is doing its work even when you’re not constantly playing. Why? Because I was sick during that week and could not practice a thing. So before I recorded the 2nd take, I was playing through the song like 5 times to get back into it. And now see / hear yourself:

Isn’t that incredible?? I mean, it’s still not perfect, but it’s SO much better than the first take, it totally blew my mind! =D I’m hyped and looking forward to next weekend. Let’s see if I can nail this with the 3rd recording!

What do you think??

P.S.: Yes, the ā€œoddā€ picture settings are intended, as I wanted to make it easier to focus on the music and playing rather than on the visuals. =)

Recording yourself is a GREAT way to see for yourself how you are getting better

Great Job!! And wikkid good tone man… seriously

Keep going through these ( even if you think the song sucks … there are quite a few for me… why I’m not doing them in order … LOL )

It’s all about learning and improving

Thank you so much!

Well I am a huge Pink Floyd Fan, grew up to it, thanks to my Dad, so I could play this song all day and wouldn’t get tired of it. But there are some songs in the list that I am not quite looking forward to… Will play them, though, because I’m sure Josh had some kind of masterplan (or idea at least  ) when he was putting together this selection of songs!

Regarding the tone, there is a difference between the two videos, too. First video - old, very dead Fender roundwound strings, they were surprisingly good for this particular song.
Second video - fresh hybrid slinky Ernie Ball roundwounds.
Third video - will come with fresh Flatwounds (current strings going to my other bass which needs new strings actually) because I miss the ā€œdeadā€ sound, lel.

String drama… I have yet to deal with … The strings I SWORE by… no longer exist… so I need to find a replacement…

Blue Steel went the way of the dodo… :frowning:

Good job on both.
What do you mean by ā€œmicro-timingā€?
And what did you ā€œseeā€?

What I hear is…

  • a very good recording both times, timing generally good, esp for a beginner, maybe a slight lag overall in both at times but nothing I’d waste time drilling down to fix, as, well, tighter timing comes with, wait for it…time.
    Tone is great btw.

I’d move on vs recording yourself 3x, you will learn a lot more from playing a variety of things.

Hey John, thanks a lot!

Well, by microtiming I mean microtiming. xDD Exactly what you describe, the slight lag here and there. That’s microtiming. The timing is not completely off, but also not quite accurate.

I’m not really a beginner, I just had a break from music for several years and before that break, I played bass for like 1 year or so. So, yes, I AM a beginner, though I’m not starting from scratch.

But this is also the reason why I’m trying to nail the songs. I want to have it really baked into my brain so that I’m ā€œfree to playā€, to listen to the other band members, to play with muscle memory so that I have the capacity to change and improve my overall playing, for example regarding dynamics, staccato, etc. This is not possible as long as one’s still glued to the sheet music, imho

Yesterday I practiced this song again and I already got to the point where I can play with my eyes closed and need no sheet music anymore, also no need to stare at my fretboard all the time. This is what I call major improvements, and this is what I want. =) I’m so looking forward to the 3rd recording!

Okayyyy guyyyys, it’s that time of the week again  - here’s my third and final recording of Another Brick in the Wall, after practicing this for 2 weeks and before I’m moving on to the next song.

The differences between the three recordings are really interesting and I’m glad I decided to track my progress that way.

Still played on Roundwounds, Flats coming next week finally. =) And still a little buzz here and there, but now it’s good enough for me to move on.

Hope you like it!

Note length issues? You probably mean that bridge part in the end, right before the guitar solo, I guess? That was not a note length issue, it was an itching nose issue - you can see me raising my hand to quickly rub my nose and suppress sneezing. I decided on the fly to play all those few notes shorter to make it sound even at least. And to me it’s still good enough to move on because that situation was just bad luck.:smile:

But thank you!! Probably gonna get back to this song and record it again next January. For the science. :sunglasses:
