I have a version I like where the slide down at 2:36 i do a quick double slide and I love how it fits in. I have another recording with that I may put up as a variation.

Great job on a fun song @groaner! Sounded pretty polished to me :). Tone worked really well too – crystal clear in the high parts and a nice growl in the low parts. Most importantly, you’re flying all over the fretboard like a rock star.

I always overlooked this song on the album cause its sandwiched between a couple other good songs, I can only image how many other fun songs have suffered the same fate 
anyway… Here is my cover, there is a couple spots where the chugging gets spotty toward the end, but I’m happy enough to move on to the next song, and I will definitely keep playing this one randomly cause its a fun one!

Reason for being " the best song" is not because of the song itself per-se, but because of how it opened my eyes (and ears) to some new and interesting bass lines, and made me appreciate a band I used to really dislike.
I never listened to The Strokes before, only knew “last night” from back when I used to go clubbing.
First time I listened to it I hated it. I never connected with this sound/style of music. That was gonna be one more of those “eat your veggies” songs again…
But, as I started working on the bassline I started loving it!
So much variety in one song, and interesting elements. It really grew on me and is such a fun song to play!
I watched a bunch of videos of them playing it live. Interestingly, they always play it way slower live than the record version.
It is obviously recorded and played live with a pick, so I decided to work on that as well, which I wanted to do after “All Star” anyway.
Muting the A note (12th fret of the A string) that starts the main riff is really challenging for me. I used a palm mute and I really needed to jam my palm down right after those two first notes and lift it up quickly. Just lifting my index finger and keeping a light touch kept a very loud harmonic sound and didn’t cut it. Adding my middle finger didn’t help.
It sounds fine in the recording, but it was sketchy the whole way through playing it this way. Didn’t have this issue with the other notes.
I would really welcome some suggestions for muting. I wonder if this one note was ringing particularly bad because it is the octave of the string?
Bottom line - I’m really happy with it!
I had a blast learning it, took a while to record because I just had such a good time practicing, and I wanted to record with a pick which took a bit longer to work out to an acceptable state.

Well this one was really fun. I must have listened to this album a hundred times back in the day but I had no memory of this song. As someone said earlier, it is sandwiched between 2 classics, so I guess it gets forgotten.
Lots of fun to play though. I opted not to use a pick because it would probably take me a month to play it cleanly. Instead I use this very inefficient plucking style with mostly my index finger. I can’t explain it but it just feels right for this song. Something about that Strokes sound.
One obvious mistake here but I was happy with the rest of my playing. That one section where you’re playing down the neck is really hard to keep time with the band, I think because of the production. Everything has distortion on it so it’s hard to hear the drums cleanly.
