This was a good one to test timing and muting

Timing was quite good @FlyingTacoMoose, however, note on the sheet music there is no need to mute in between each note. These are not to be played saccato, but rather one into the next with no ‘rest’ or space between. Your muting would come in going from string to string only, but again not leaving space between the notes.

That all said, you can play these any old way you want, however, if you are trying to play them as Josh tabbed them, then you would eliminate the muting of each string causing a shorter note with a rest in between.

Stoked to be posting my first full song (that’s right I started with #2).

For background, I started the B2B course on April 13, almost exactly a month ago. I played bass for a couple of years in high school, which is near 25 years ago now. But I never took lessons before, and played no instruments in between then and now. And I used to play lefty. So I’m basically starting from scratch.

Stuff I used:

Squier P-Bass
Zoom B1X Four on the “AMPG Set” preset
Presonus AudioBox USB 96
Bass removed from backing track by Moises

Thank you so much!

I’ve got Another Brick In The Wall almost ready to share, but I was too hung over yesterday to get a good performance.

I’ll definitely keep posting, I consider this part of practice. If I don’t have an in-person instructor to perform in front of, I may as well play for the audience here.

As promised in my intro post, I’m getting started with covers! I’ve just finished Module 6 so I expect to work through quite a few in the next few weeks. I think I’m following in the tradition of not doing Song 1 first because I don’t want to wrap my head around a different tuning.

This was fun! Had to do so many takes trying to work out the recording setup that I really got the song under my fingers.

Congrats on your first video! I think you had more consistent volume between your notes than I did in mine, good going.

Welcome, I look forward to seeing your next one!

P.S. Nice choice of color. And is that a matching strap and cable I see? Looking good!

Well done @julia.lavender.rose !!!
Sounded great, nice technique.

If you care about these things…

  • the notes in this song are not meant to be played staccato (in short bursts with space in between, but rather legato (one into the next). Of course, you can play it any way you like, unless you are trying to duplicate the sheet music as written. Some of the later passages (the runs, etc) you moved to a more legato sound but then drifted back to staccato playing (staccat0 notes are marked with a dot above the note, rather than shorting the note lengths and writing in rests across the sheet music).

Food for thought as you journey on, but regardless, fantastic playing, keep the covers coming!!!

I definitely do care about these details!

I saw this note on someone else’s cover after I had finished the take I was happy with. I was trying to match the sound of the recording alongside the written bassline.

I wonder if what’s happening here is similar to something happening in the Motown covers where it sounds like the bass drops out with the snare, but what we’re actually hearing is old tape recordings where the snare would “compress” the bass out as it saturates.

Not sure I’ll come back to this recording, but I wonder how I could recreate that sound with modern tools. I’ll think about it for future recordings.

If you had the snare isolated it’s pretty easy to side chain so the snare hits duck the bass. No idea how to do that without recording or programming the drums yourself though.

I’m finding the process of filming myself really humbling. Here’s a song that I would have dismissed as being way too easy to even bother learning, and yet I see myself making a ton of mistakes.

I planned on recording in one take, having played the song a couple of times yesterday, but ended up restarting a bunch. I see there’s been talk about the note length, about when to lift. My brain kept wanting to play the song staccato so I had to fight that natural urge.

I’ve never noticed it before, but watching the video, I see a pretty pronounced bend on the string when I play those repeated D notes. Don’t know if it’s a trick of the camera, as I don’t think it’s a big enough bend to make the note out of tune, but it’s something I need to work on for sure. I think I was fretting too hard.

Something that happens with this tune is that I seem to lose my hand shape and end up mashing the fret with all 4 fingers. Again, something to work on I think.

every song in the 50 (now 100) is there on purpose, Josh is one smart cookie who is teaching us something in every one.

great playing, bass still a bit high in mix

Had a lot of fun with this one.

Thanks. I don’t have it memorized yet, if that’s supposed to be the challenge. I was going off of tab so I see when the ‘change ups’ were coming.

I did fumble a couple of notes here and there, but overall I thought it was pretty good.

Really enjoyed playing this one and PF. Looking forward to continuing this challenge.
