Song 4 - "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash

Thanks @T_dub @TNKA36 - I love the original but just felt it was a little slow…

Hello! Here’s my latest cover. One thing I did for really the first time here was messing around with plucking hand position. Between that and rolling back the mids slightly, I was surprised how warm I could get my round wounds to sound. Funnily enough, this is approximately the opposite sound I usually go for as I usually boost my mids.!

Lessons learned here:

  • Playing around with plucking hand positioning is very impactful

  • Keeping time without a drummer is hard

  • Finger rolling is really efficient but takes its toll on my fingers to do it for an entire song. As with all techniques, I’m sure I’ll build up more finger rolling stamina as I practice it. As you can see from the video, I ended up switching entirely to using two fingers for the root/fifth shape

  • Root fifth root fifth root fifth root fifth root fifth root fifth root fifth root fifth root fith

As always, feedback welcome :metal:

Nice job @RoyB
A bit of catch up to the beat on the onset (you can give yourself a bit of a count in in a DAW for future reference), then your groove was solid for a while.
You started getting slightly ahead of the beat towards the middle/end. This is easy to do on this song as I swear it speeds up a little as it goes.

Well done!

Nice job @RoyB…. Songs like FPB are a bit challenging in not just the finger roll, but also with timing since it’s a bit difficult to lock in without a good heavy beat or a high hat to hear…. With this song, you have to listen for the “Snare”.

JC’s group did have a percussionist, and in this song he was playing snare drum with a brush which might be a bit hard to lock into…

I listened to your recording both through monitor speakers and headsets and it sounded a bit like something was (maybe just a little) out of tune/tone - not much, but just enough to make me wonder a bit……

The other thing I noticed was that two of your fingers on your plucking hand seem to be “tucked under” instead of “open hand”…. Just an observation, but those two fingers (to me) are really instrumental in the muting process….

Overall, a great job on a song that may sound easy, but really isn’t…:smiley::smiley::+1::+1::+1:

Keep on Thumpin’!

possibly because you have to tune down “a bit”… for whomever they decided to tune to that day

and as far as I know, the original recording of the song has no drums, just 2 guitars and a bass.

IIRC this tune is a little off tuning

IIRC this tune is a little off tuning

That makes a lot of sense! Something seemed just slightly off when going to the C# on the G string and I double checked with two separate tuners that I was in tune.

Great tip - I think I’m spoiled by playing songs that have a little heads up before the bass kicks in

Thanks for the detailed feedback, @Lanny! Can you elaborate a little on this? The “tucking” habit is something I developed pretty early on and I used to worry a lot about it in my first couple weeks of playing but have since kind of shrugged it off as some bonus muting insurance for the lower strings.

Can you explain a little more what you mean by those two fingers being instrumental in the muting process? I’m always looking for more muting tips

Very nicely done @RoyB !

Greetings all, here is my take on Johnny Cash. This gave me a great excuse to breakout an old T-Shirt my wife won’t let me wear out in public  This is my first time recording a cover with a DAW, got a lot to learn but having fun doing it!

nice job @dlamson13
I like your fills too.
The one comment I would make is the bass sounds like it is rushing the beat a bit.
This song seems to bring that out in most of us. After all, we are rollin’ that train down the track, gotta keep it movin’ :upside_down_face:, but what it tends to push us to do is to rush the beat a bit.
Great tone and otherwise awesome job!

Nice first up @dlamson13 ,
Good tone in the mix, just a bit of work to do on the syncing.
Keep up the good work,
Cheers Brian

Thanks @John_E! You’re definitely right about the rushing, must be that train thing :cowboy_hat_face: I never felt as locked into this one as I did with the others. Will keep it in my “setlist” going forward and work on slowin’ my roll haha!
As for the tone, I wasn’t sure a bass with active humbuckers would pull it off, but I just killed all treble everywhere and was pretty happy with it.
Take care,
Dan

Thanks @sakkasie! Glad you liked the tone. My previous cover of “Crazy” was a muddy mess, so switching over to using a DAW seems to be helping,
Take care,

Nice job @dlamson13…!! Good tone, and also a great first time mixing using a DAW…. A bit of rushing the song along by using a somewhat aggressive attack gives the song more of a rock style groove though - one of the things most guitar players turned bass players often have to deal with when playing bass vs guitar….

Keep on Thumpin’!

Thanks for listening @Lanny, you know it! I have a tendency to try and turn everything into a rocker. Might be better suited for next week’s AC/DC attempt :metal: Glad I started using Reaper, might throw a few guitar tracks into the next one for fun and some mixing practice.
Take care,
Dan
