Song 4 - "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash

Anyone can play them any way they like, music is art after all.
I generally comment on articulation just in case folks are looking to learn it as written.
I approach the challenge songs as an extension of B2B, and therefore no different than an instructor giving you songs to learn. The instructor would want it as written.
So at least at the start I try to point this out to folks in case they miss it but not purposfully.

I hadn’t played the song for many months, did some practice runs before the recording. This was my first attempt at recording and didn’t want to try a second time :frowning: .
I missed a note near the start, my timing drifted and my final note is . . . sad. Near enough was good enough on the day  . The comments above notice the song speed changes, hopefully that explains my timing lapse.
Peripheral vision helped me find the C# and G# frets :eyes:

There is a comment above, Jan 12th, about staccato note playing and I remember seeing an image of noob v skilled bass note sound waves. The noob had gaps between notes and the skilled had sound waves that almost faded then the next note was played. Therefore, the lesson is each note fades into the next UNLESS there is a rest note. Am I correct ?

Hey there, @EverC,

the staccato playing was me - it vibed with me more, but John_E correctly pointed out that the notation is without staccato.

Regarding your cover, I like that you were locked in well. I’m also working on my “reading” face, hehe. And I think you have a sweet acoustic bass. :+1:

There is info here in the thread about the tuning:
Song 4 - "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash - #76 by JT I think you could tweak that a bit.

Keep it up! Great to see the 50 Songs challenge alive and well!

Cheers,
Antonio

Nice job @EverC !

Good effort.
Playing wise well done.
Timing wise - you are playing very ‘ahead of the beat’, this can happen when first learning and focusing on playing the note vs. knowing the notes and playing the song.
This results in the bassline feeling ‘rushed’.
Otherwise, great job!

Sometimes these songs are tuned - well - out of tune.
And this is one of them (I think one of the AC/DC songs is too.

From way up in this thread, we all found out…

We mostly all learned this the hard way.
Great playing other than being ‘in tune - out of tune’.

Very good timing.

Yah … Highway to Hell is 1/4 step down … and its 100% blocked on Youtube too… fun fun! lol

Since the song only uses the D and G strings … I only dropped those 2 …

Here is my stay at Folsom Prison. :stuck_out_tongue:

So, here we go, song 4!

As the original source, I chose the recording of the album “I Walk The Line” from 1964 and transcribed the whole song on my own by ear, to handle pitch issues with the old tape. That was a very interesting exercise!

And of course, it’s played on the Telecaster bass!

Do you like the result?? =)

Great job! good way to deal with the wonky tuning too :stuck_out_tongue:

Thank you! Well, it was probably the most time consuming way to deal with the pitch, but probably the one of which I learned the most, too. AND: it was fun!!

Much appreciated … I try to capture the sound of the song as best I can

The GT-1B does help with some 50’s 60’s 70’s and 80’s sounds preloaded in :stuck_out_tongue: LOL

Thank you so much!! I don’t know why, but for some sort of reason, it makes me really happy when people like “my stuff” (as it’s not even mine, I’m just playing it, like many others, but still  ).
