To my ear, the UG “Official” tabs have been reliably solid. A few instances where I have determined some easier ways to play, but mostly they’re good to go right out of the gate, changing or meddling will come with experience.
And the backing tracks generally sound good. Doesn’t do so hot with synths or horns in my opinion, but other instruments sounds pretty good. It’ll get you 90% of the way.
Yes, while the free UG is hit-or-miss, at best, the UG Official tabs (subscription required) are generally very good; and you can set the interface to show standard notation as along with (or instead of) tabs, which I prefer. Songsterr doesn’t have that. You can also mute the bass, or play only the bass. UG chord charts are also good. Overall, the key benefit that Songsterr brings is that you can sync the tabs to the actual track in YouTube ( which is a big benefit).
I definitely like having both to work with, but Ultimate Guitar would be my pick if I could only have one.
When you are using Songsterr to sync & play along with a YouTube video, can you adjust the Songsterr playback speed and does this adjust the video play speed as well or are you stuck playing with the speed of the video?
Thanks
On my pc, there is a bar near the bottom of the screen with controls for play/stop, volume, speed, etc. At the far right are three dots (. . . ) that, when you click on them, lead to a menu for other functions like transpose, pitch, count down and “notation.” The choices are tabs, standard notation or both.
On my phone or ipad, the three dots are at the top right corner of my screen. That leads to a menu for several basic functions, and a “settings” link at the very bottom, which in turn leads to the menu for transpose and notation choices.
Problem solved… Songsterr. Thanks for all the suggestions. With Songsterr you can play along with the YouTube video, plus slow it up and repeat sections. Not sure why UG doesn’t have this capability. Since I have a UG subscription, I’ll still use it as a reference.
Not to mention it has a pretty neat YouTube video to Tab AI generator. I’ve made half a dozen songs with that now and they might not be absolutely perfect but they are definitely very playable without any tweaking.
Oh yes. I am messing around with that feature currently, and for the songs I tried (two so far), it took several hours!
Edit: Ah, wait, might not be true, just reloaded the page that still said “generating”, and it was done. So I might have waited longer than I needed to.
FYI you do NOT need the paid version of Songsterr for the tabs to sync with the YouTube song. I use it all the time on Android with the free version.
UG does tend to have more accurate tabs sometimes, but Songsterr is way better to play along to, as you can play along to the actual song instead of horrible cheesy midi, and it’s free.
UG is also a ripoff because they try to charge you $100 a year, but if you say it’s too expensive, they’ll give it to you for $25 a year, and if you delete your account, they’ll give it to you for $10 a year. Also their customer service sucks. I don’t know about Songsterr customer service because I’ve never needed it.
I need to get them to do this. I cancelled when they raised it to 40, and the best I’ve seen since is 25… I don’t really even need it - I just like access to their official tabs when I hear a song I want to look up…
But after about a dozen measures, there is a popup that covers the tabs to promote Pro. You can click to “continue with interruptions” but that’s kind of a PITA.
