The PICK thread

I still use mine. I kept it when I sold the pedal

Get the variety pack on Amazon and see what you prefer.

Here’s what I went with (more of a medium, but great for bass). Lots of players go between the .88 and 1.0 Dunlop PVP102 Pick Variety Pack, Assorted, Medium/Heavy, 12/Player’s Pack Amazon.com
If you want thinner, change the option.

Edit: just saw you already ordered. :+1:

I actually really like my Dunlop 1.5 picks, but everyone is raving about thinner picks so I ordered a bag of 'em in different thicknesses. I’ll play around with them when I get them tomorrow.

Here is my only recording of me using a pick…admittedly it was kinda cool (to me)

That’s awesome @kerushlow!

Thanks. It kind of lived and died with that one, but mostly because string jumping I’m infinitely better at with fingers or slapping.

I got this variety pack of Tortex picks today, different shapes and thicknesses from .73 to 1.14. I’ll experiment with them and see if I like them more than the 1.5 I’ve been playing.

One of the picks in this assortment was this odd shaped one. Can anyone tell me purpose of this shape, and is there a particular way to hold it?

Without a picture I am guessing it is probably a Jazz Pick.

Sorry I forgot to attach the photo. It’s there now.

There are a couple really small ones that say Jazz Pick on it.

Ahh, that’s not a Jazz Pick, nope. No idea what that is.

As you’ve seen, Jazz Picks are smaller shaped and thicker.

Okay, maybe @terb will know. Thanks

Never seen that before. According to the site, it’s to give you a variety of edges for different sound experimentation. Not much else is said

So I imagine I just hold it at the top like any other pick. I played with it but didn’t hear much of a difference.

Some players come down at an angle with the pick as opposed to flat edged against the string. Give that a shot with the scalloped edges.

I’ve never seen this kind of pick.

Jazz picks are small and really thick, that’s what I use for guitars but it doesn’t work well with the heavy bass strings.

I found this video about the fin picks. It seems to me it lends itself more to guitar than bass.

At 0.73 it’s getting thin for a bass pick too. For Tortex I really like 1.0-ish picks a lot more.

0.88 seems like a really nice size for Ultex to me so far.

yeah, at this point my conclusion is that the Ultex picks are ideal for bass in the 0.88 - 1.0 - 1.14 thicknesses. the difference is not huge, and someone may prefer one or another depending on personnal feel, string gauge, right hand position (important for the perceived string tension). but those 3 thicknesses are really the sweet spot range for bass in my opinion.
