The PICK thread

I’ve been experimenting with this bag of picks and I have concluded the 1.14 is my favorite. I like it even better than the 1.5 I’ve been playing.
I may order more of that size.

Question: @terb or @howard, do you prefer the bigger picks? I ask because some of the ones in this pack are rather large which I seem to be able to get a better grip on than the smaller ones. Or does it even make a difference?
I have extremely oily skin and I’m afraid of the pick slipping out from my fingers while playing.

I prefer the normal sized picks myself.

I don’t mind any picks & I do use them quite a bit myself. I play metal bass primarily. I’ve never been disappointed with those bland gray Dunlop picks with the “max-grip” perforations on them that have been around since the early 2000s or earlier.

I will have to try out the Ultex picks & those Dunlop Vortex picks. They look very interesting.

Out of that variety pack, I like the Gator picks for texture. The Max grips above also will come in handy for a heavy hand.

The texture on these look very intriguing. I’m gonna pick like 3 different packs of picks next time I got to buy bass strings now, thanks to all of you.

Fair point, I do have a heavy hand & usually always reach for the max grips when available.

I prefer the normal picks. also I’m fine too with the “sharp” ones : after some wear they become exactly like normal picks.

I don’t like the bigger picks.

I just ordered a small pack of them from Amazon to try.

I prefer the 1.0 Ultex, best picks I have tried so far so thanks for the tip @terb . Before this I was using a 0.88 Tortex (well actually the Darkglass one).

I am currently rocking the dunlop gator 1.5s. I like them but they are the only ones I have tried so I am gonna have to pick up a variety pack and experiment a bit.

I just got these delivered.

I’ll be evaluating both.

The 1.14 Ultex is my good buddy now too. Really liking them.

Has anyone tried these picks available on Carol Kaye’s website? I would think they would be specific for use with bass guitars. I’m not to the stage of trying a pick yet, but hope to do so eventually.

Got Ultex 0.88, 1.0, and 1.14s. I could only find the 0.88s in their “triangle” shape, which are much bigger than I realized they would be. It’s actually kind of nice to have more to grab on to but I’m not sure if it would be better to start with the standard sized picks – anyone have any insight there? I do think I’ll need to stay on the 0.88 thickness for a while until I get more comfortable with picking bass strings.

EDIT: I see pick size has already been discussed above. I guess the old adage applies here – It’s not the size of the pick, it’s how you use it :smirk:

it’s a matter of taste really. I won’t say that a shape is better than another one, we all have our own preferences  I have a friend who really likes those big triangles. I personnally have one or two and I’m not a big fan.

I’m a new picker, but I like the triangles because I feel I get better leverage to strike and make the right resonance. Especially playing faster. In fact the only reason I don’t like the Dunlops is they have too much “scratch” I guess? That might be a newbie problem, too. Feel it out. I’m working on a Tool song this morning with a standard medium guitar pick and doing fine.

yeah I get a lot of scratch noise also, assume that is something that will get better as technique improves.

Try a thicker pick

@terb! So this is relevant as I never really use a pick. Just grabbed this one from a music store and played around with it.

Then came up with this jam (it’s a loop). Strangely in G Major but sounds minor kind of, and gave me a Dark Country vibe. If you want to mess with it, feel free, playing G Major stuff works pretty easily over it, and the part is very “guitar” even though it is on a six string bass.

Haven’t tried the tiny jazz picks yet.

That one is pretty thick, doesn’t have much give or flexibility at all. It seemed to work well with a delay effect, I did strumming in the example above with an open G string and the other notes being on the c string. The harshness of it helped define each open strike of the G, giving it a bit more definition than a thinner pick. I like the grip on it too, as I drop picks because I’m not used to them.
