I spent WAY too much time learning how to double thumb to give it up! Depending on the song style, a pick is preferable for ease and smoothness of playing though.

It’s all about that sharp attack bright pick tone.

Well and speed too yeah.

Or just straight into a Gallien-Krueger

Didn’t know that was his rig! Makes sense though, you got Flea and John Myung who are GK guys too, and can hear the tonal quality.

Ampegs sound even better with picks

I’m of the opinion that all amps do… :speak_no_evil:

I would agree with that

All relative. Guys like Marcus Miller (who has killer tone) and Claypool wouldn’t agree! Harris and Burton were just finger style. But there are pick players with great tone too! I say, why limit yourself? Use it all!

just imagine how fast Steve Harris would have been with a pick

No doubt. It’s just a preference, but it all sounds good. A nice thumpy P with flats is also great. It all has its place.

those pick well too.

cf. Carol Kaye

from her FAQ:

I’ve always used medium-gauge flatwound strings since I play exclusively with a hard pick (with a flat wrist, not like guitar players). Most of the 1960s hits out of Hollywood were cut on flatwound strings by bass players who played with a pick.

Here’s an interesting one. My guitar playing friend gave me this at lunch today. Guaranteed to not slip out of your hand.
It’s 1.45 mm and plays quite well.

I have more than a few of those but never use them for whatever reason.

What I’d like to know is what these are used for. These curved index ring picks, which I have a few of also. Is it for Chicken Pickin?

It’s sometimes used in Spanish style or finger style guitar.

I couldn’t figure out either @kerushlow & @JerryP

Who knows, maybe it’s all of the above?

some guitar player use those things, it’s a kind of hybrid pick playing with multiple fingers as you can use more than one on those “picks” on different fingers. I never learned to play like this, it feels very unfamiliar to me.

See that’s what I thought it was & if I remember correctly it did come out of one of my guitar pick bags as I play guitar & bass so things mix up sometimes.
