The best way to count a triplet is to say “tri-puh-let”. If swung, push the rhythm with an accented “TRIH-pu-l’t”

Cha-Cha, Swing, and Polka dances are all based on triplet rhythms, and learning the basic step of those is a really good way to ingrain that rhythm.

Almost any slow blues in 12/8 can be interpreted as eighth note triplets over a 4/4 groove. Here is the rhythmic basis for that - listen for the hi-hat to play the triplets:

If you want to mix it up a bit The WASP from the Doors is quite challenging with triplets mixed up with 1/4s and 1/8s (working on it at the moment). Although once you’ve got the first bar in the clip below figured you’ve actually got 90% of the bass line which repeats this driving beat for most of the song with some variation and some fills/turn arounds.


Actually I find this one easier to get the beat by listening and playing along to the original rather than reading the score.

I don’t know the song, but from the way these “triplet” figures are notated, I would assume that they more than likely try to transcribe a swung or shuffle feel here.

Indeed, it’s a continuous gradient from straight eights to swung (tripletty) eights and to shuffled “eighths”…

Yes it’s very much a blues shuffle sort of sound in which the rests are essential to the feel of it.

Not really THAT surprising. It’s an artefact of trying to transcribe a “feel”, and there are different swing feels and different shuffle feels, with completely straight eighths at one end of the spectrum and potentially a march rhtythm at the other end.
