That’s not supposed to happen, right? Not sure if I did something wrong. I just changed my strings for the first time yesterday to LaBella Deep Talkin’ flat wounds 760FS. I was tuning the D string and something suddenly gave way. I thought at first it was the string snapping, which is kind of funny because I was worried about the G in another thread.
Is this something I can investigate myself by removing the tuning machine? Am I looking at buying new machines? Is it OK to leave the other strings on while I figure it out?
No that is absolutely not supposed to happen and I swear I remember another post of this happening to someone recently. This cannot be repaired, you need a new tuning machine.
If the bass is new and in warranty I would return it.
Otherwise I would just order an entire set and upgrade the bass at this point; it’s an easy swap if you can find some where the screws align (which you usually can).
I would recommend either HipShot or Gotoh - both brands are top notch.

FWIW the snapped off metal looks like Zinc alloy does when it breaks. Zinc alloy is a really useful and common lightweight metal used for lots of applications but it can also be brittle, and if cast poorly there can be defects. HipShot uses it in their Licensed Ultralites, which is why I usually recommend getting the USA ones, which are machined aluminum.
I got confused by the peg vs post vs tuner vs machine terminology, so was not sure what to look for.
I actually just found a YouTube video showing someone who ALSO has the same exact tuning machine and problem. They were able to screw it back in after removing the whole thing, but it probably depends on if it’s stripped inside or not.
Thanks for the recommendations. The posts are pretty scratched up. And it seems like it could happen again. So, even if I can get it back together, I might end up replacing them anyway.
Just to follow up for posterity, that video didn’t work for my situation. I can see now that the end part of the post is completely sheared off, unlike in the video.
This did indeed happen to me whilst changing strings just a few days ago. Fortunately, it was really easy to replace (and so many thanks again to @RBC64). I’m like, super incompetent too, so if I could do it, anyone can
