This one is a one of a kind, but we can’t possibly omit it on this thread. Leland Sklar’s Frankenstein Bass :

If I remember correctly, it’s :

  • a Charvel P-style body that Leland chose at the factory because it was the more resonnant *
  • a 60’s Fender Jazz Bass neck
  • mandolin fretwires
  • two early EMG P pickups with the old preamp that sucks battery very fast
  • the plate between the pickups is used to close the battery compartment

( * : in your face, anti-tonewood guys )

The positioning of the pickups there is kind of awesome. I would be tempted to go Full Throttle there and add a third.

Warwick will, of course, make you anything you want, so here’s a double-P Streamer Stage II:

Or an LX:

Or a Buzzard:

etc etc

I really like the maple neck on that Warwick, that’s not common at all…

Are the Ibanez basses with their Nordstrand Big Break pickups basically also double P, at least kinda?
From their website:

Nordstrand™ “Big Break” pickups cram a meaty split coil into a soapbar-style pickup, producing a full-bodied, powerful, aggressive tonal texture, while still retaining the clarity that’s characteristic of single coil tone with noiseless performance.

I don’t know. What Nordstrand says about their Big Split

“The Big Split tone is one of both precision and muscularity. Its nature is of a sort of hybrid P/J character, only it delineates a smoother, stronger, and richer tonal palette.”

Understand that the Big Break is the Big Split design but crafted in Indonesia instead of the US. I put two EMG P4 soapbars in my Stream and it did not have the same effect, it was a nice tone but did not have the punch. It was indeed smoother

Sorry if this is a duplicate, but I don’t think I saw this mentioned:

Drool I’ve never seen a Warwick with a maple neck. This looks just gorgeous. Love the configuration too. If I ever buy a bass again it would be the Warwick or the pebble grey Sandberg which both are waaaaay above my budget :relieved:

My luthier said the Harley Benton Gotoh’s are really well built and a good starting point for modding. Not sure if they have a double P configuration?
