Nice! Who makes it?

It’s a G&L Custom Shop Matador V 5 for sale on Sweetwater for just under 5 large ($4,984)!!!

Man, the BBVIII has a big chonky P neck. 43.5mm and not thin. Like, the 40mm D profiles on the SBV or BB734a feel like tiny Jazz necks in comparison.

It’s much more vintage P feeling than my actual P-bass was.

Hoping someone here has some opinions on the Vantage VP795B? I can pick one up that needs some love locally for under $300. I’ll put hands on it first to see if it just needs aesthetic work vs electronics and stuff, but before I get there, I’d like to know kinda what they sound like. At a minimum, I’d need to fill a couple of holes on the front where it looks like someone had a thumbrest on it at one point, and probably needs to be sanded and refinished. It also comes with the original hard case. Should I bother pursuing?

Edit: I did run the serial number and it’s 100% one of the 1980 MIJ models.

I dig it, it looks cool and is probably a really good instrument if 1980 MIJ. Vantage were apparently made in the Matsumoku factory until 1984, which will make them top tier, think MIJ Aria or Fujigen level quality.

well that ^^^ is beautiful. let me try again to post what i tried to post above but got myself completely confused and deleted it. i think this might fall into the “tonewood” category, but what does reverse p pickups give you? anything? it seems a regular split p is designed to give you more bass on the lower strings by pushing it closer to the neck and more zing on top for the higher strings by being closer to the bridge. soooo what would reversing that give you (i guess just a different sound?).

I’ve got two P Bass clones. A 1987 Charvel Model 1B and a Sire Marcus Miller P5. The Charvel has a reverse P configuration and the Sire a regular P configuration. I much prefer the sound of the Charvel but I sure that is due to the pickups themselves more than their position. In any case a reverse P is reputed to have a punchier sound. According to google :grimacing: a reverse P configuration, this reversal reportedly results in a more balanced sound across the strings, with tighter low notes and fuller high notes. Francis Roco Prestia of Tower of Power is credited with starting the reverse P configuration.

Hopefully @Al1885 can weigh in …I’m sure he is much more knowledge/insightful on this than I for sure!

Perfect for jamming during the zombie apocalypse. Those pointy bits would hurt.

Double quater pounder, nice!!

That is the best Leo’s designed Strats. All of the Single coil goodness and none of the bad traits. Too bad it’s not in production when he was alive.

Well the man himself explained it about his bass and how the pickup config came to be. I’ll let him tell the story.
