Upgrade Day! Anyone Else Upgrading?

This is still one of my favorite basses on the forum.

Thanks man. I still look at other basses online and think ‘yeah, that would be interesting’. But then I come home, pick up my P Bass and it just feels right in my hands.

Sometimes we get lucky I guess. The cheapest Fender Bass and it’s a keeper.

Welcome to my world

The DP122 is a great choice! I had them too … until I went for the active EMGs - sounds even clearer / punchier

I haven’t compared with active EMG but to me the Model P clearly sounds more punchy and with stronger tonal body than the Geezers in side by sides. YMMV.

I had both the DiMarzio and the EMG GZR. I share your observation. The GZR sound more aggressive (=harsher?).

The active EMGs are next level, in my opinion.

The standard active EMG sound more defined, deep & controlled, while the X series seem to have both more bottom on the low end and more headroom at the higher end of the frequency spetrum. My favourite!

Most of you know the kind of music I play, so I want to get something to fit that genre.

Go Fralin, @JerryP. It will serve you exceedingly well.

You can always EQ it and/or effect it any way you want to suit whatever you play, plus, you’ll always have pure vintage P tone at your fingertips whenever you need it.

That said, Lollar was my second choice back when I was researching vintage P pups. Next was a Nordstrand NP4V vintage pup.

All three are great, solid choices for vintage P tone.

I say we have @Al1885 record one of everything, since owns one of everything , and a little time with an eq pedal we could achieve all the tones possible with our respective rigs! The point of reference is all we need! And a half decent eq pedal of course.

Fralin’s a great choice.

Might also want to check out Bareknuckle and the Fender CS '60s.

Beauty, my LP is the guitar I kept all the decades that I didn’t play. I should get mine out and at least hang it on the wall in the music room, even if I’m not going to play it. They really are pretty guitars.

After doing the due diligence and everyone’s great recommendations, I ordered the Fralin P-Bass pickups, stock winding and black covers. No date for shipping yet.
Thanks to everyone for the help and education!

Yeah that’s gonna be a great choice for your sound, Jerry.

Probably the one upgrade most of us will end up doing. Today I installed 2 pairs of Schaller S-locks.

I wrote a longer post so hopefully others won’t suffer with beer washers.

Beer washers are actually my preferred method. I tried several types of lock washers and like the classic washers. Of course ymmv and that’s great :+1:

I simply dislike having lots of straps and have a single one I like more than all the others I tried. Would rather spend more on one strap than buy a bunch, really.
