Upgrade Day! Anyone Else Upgrading?

I do like those

Might need some soldering though

EMG to the rescue!

If you want passive: EMG GZR! If you want something better (in my opinion): EMG PX (active)! For active you need some space for the 9v battery - which is often the case…

EDIT @JerryP - I have the EMG GZR, DiMarzio DP126 (= DP148 and DP122), EMG active P and some X series PUs. The X series blows everything away and also has the VLPF.

I’m going to check these brands out.

I have both  both very good, in a different way. the Fralin is very “vintage” with all the P warmth, and the DiMarzio is a monster rock pickup.

Yep, I was going for a vintage P pup, hence, Fralin. :joy:

The P pickup on my EBMM Cutlass is a killer that can go full-on rock mode or vintage with a tweak of the tone knob.

The DiMarzio DP122 is one of the best Ps on the market, nicely priced and a bit modern in sound. It’s on my pink Mustang

For a vintage sound I went with Fender Custom Shop 64. @booker_t can attest to what he thinks of these pickups.

Though today I would go Curtis Novak, like I said. I have them in two basses (not a P pickup) and they are great.

Can someone explain to me “overwind/underwind” and how it affects the tone?

Has anyone clear coated a pickup? I have a preamp I haven’t installed because it doesn’t like exposed poles.

Overwound will in general be louder, more midrange, and darker, underwound will be weaker.

When asking about a double P bass, Lindy Frailin advised me to go normal winding for the neck pickup and overwound for the bridge

A few of us do but yeah, the Model P (DP122) is my favorite aftermarket P pickup, and my second favorite P pickup of all.

I stand corrected, I went with Pure Vintage 63s from Fender

The CS pickups are nice. Every stock Fender pickup I have owned has been bland, though. Not bad exactly, just kind of flat and meh.

But the CS pickups sound much much nicer. I actually liked them better than Fralins, but YMMV.

I agree. The stock Fenders sound meh, but the Custom Shop and I would add Pure Vintage sound nice

Yeah, that’s why I want to change them. :joy:

I like Delano P. Unapologetically bold and in your face, at the same time very civilized. It’s like quarter pounder on steroids.

I have this pickup in my American pro 5s, I love it.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I’ll be checking all these out over the weekend.

I’ve done EMG GZR’s and Fender custom shop 62 p’s. I really like them both. Both sound different to me. GZR’s a little more gritty, Fender’s more warm/deep. With the Fender’s I used the obsidian prewire set up. The GZR’s are a solderless system. Easy DIY upgrades.

Fralin 100%. I have them in a slew of basses and love love love them

Lots of solid suggestions @JerryP . I thought the Mexican pickups were fine but since I swapped out for the DP122 I now get why people would want to experiment.

It’s subtle but the 122 is an improvement. Sounds clearer / punchier (I think?). Pretty reasonable price.

I also tried the solder-less wiring harness from Obsidian. It was an easy install and the pots feels much nicer. You can buy the individual parts for much less obviously.
