Upgrade Day! Anyone Else Upgrading?

Thanks! (And thanks to everyone else for the kind words!)

I love my SBV’s fretboard too, it has a really nice grain to it. All of them that I have seen do. I guess Taiwan got a really good run of rosewood in those years.

My upgrades are a success!

Just got back from my weekly lesson. My instructor commented on how good the bass sounded - the Squier CV 50s P, the Labor Day bass

Basically it’s a $500 bass when parts are totaled that punches above its weight.

Replacing my AKG K240 headphones with AKG K712 Pro’s. So far I’ve just given them a quick test but I really like them.

Very nice. They are on my Santa wish list.

Amazon had a pair of open box ones for $219 so I jumped on them.

I see that. At Sweetwater they are $639 with the same manufacturer model number (removed from the saved 'til later cart)).

Yikes! I don’t think I’d have spent that much.

D5 has its first mod.

The one thing I would change is a little more low end presence. I’ve been doing some research on this bass, and one thing people have mentioned a few times is that a himass bass might bring out the low end.

And as you know if it’s on the internet it must be true.

I happened to have a Fender HiMass bridge which I took off something. Should really keep a notebook. Flipped it over and it said “brass”. Perfect, brass bridge and saddles.

Put it on, tone is a bit darker, low end a bit better. Mids and treble are still good. Sustain is improved, hammer ons are better.

minor adjustment, but that’s all I was looking for

Great Idea @Wombat-metal… Upgrade Days are always the best!! I thought about doing the same thing but always get too side tracked and carried away during my parts swap outs to actually carry through… I have HiMass bridges on all my Fenders, Yamaha, and Ibanez bass’s. Although I duo have a Babitz on my BEAD bass, I have Hipshot KickAss’s on all the rest. Does help with the lows and certainly the sustain… I did replace the pickups in one of my Fenders with a set of Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders and they really took things to a low level…

Keep On Thumpin’!

That remains to be seen!

Is that a Steve Harris bass? If so interesting combo.

The SH bass has pinstripes all round. Plus I think it’s a two man lift to get it on the bench.

No, it’s a Lakland DJ4.

That would be an expensive downgrade! Good luck! Hope they work out for you!

Upgrade day is here!

Definitely mixed results.

First, tried the True Customs pickup in the Tele Bass. The screw holes on the base are too small for a US standard pickup screw. So shelved for now.

Started the Fujigen upgrade. Pulled out the Royal Cheeses, and took the Fender 63s out of the box. The pickups are attached to a metal plate. The FGN is a reverse P design. The plates don’t fit.

Sigh. Put everything back in the box to think.

D5 got upgraded with the Stinger. Need to add some more foam to the bottom to raise the pickup a little, but sounds good with the LaBella LTs I put on today. Really old school. Like it.

Had an epiphony. The Fender 63s are grounded to the bottom plate, and the plate is in turn grounded to the pot. All I have to do is move the foam and flip the plate, then put the foam back on the other side. Flipped over it will fit fine.

I don’t know why I confess these moments of idiocy. Well that’s for another day.

C’mon, man. Everyone here has accidentally and/or proudly confessed some idiocy at one point or another, including Your Trusty Bass Teacher. Hell, we’re bass players! :joy:

Congrats! That’s exciting. Would love to hear it.

Then you can make fun of my playing. I may try and record tomorrow. Haven’t quite got that down yet. But got up and did some server upgrades this morning, then bass upgrades, and my energy is spent. Still not up to good health yet.

Wait, so the plate goes on TOP and the foam on bottom?
That would explain the noise in my Bass VI.
Can you verify @Wombat-metal
