Upgrade Day! Anyone Else Upgrading?

I don’t mind the feel of flats.

I am looking forward to the DR Low Riders, which I plan to install tomorrow. Be interesting to try rounds again.

I’ve heard good things about LO-RIDERS. Hope they work out for you.

I never dug the black pickup covers on the Edwards, and, over time decided that I wasn’t crazy about the Seymour Duncan vintage pickup in it either, so, Fralin P with white covers. Matches the white neck binding and block inlays, pickguard etc.

My first stand alone Fralin P. I likey.

Makes me wonder if anyone has done a Zebra P. Zebra humbuckers are common with guitars.

A Zebra P would look kind of cool.

edit: I didn’t see any stock ones like that on a quick safari, but I did notice MAMA makes these which are not what I had in mind but are kind of cool as well:

Lots of people make the plastic covers in various colors, so someone should be able to make their own Zebra if they want.

Oh hey, here’s one:

edit: oops, no, that’s just showing the white cap on one side and the bottom of the winding on the other. Oh well. Looks like you need to add your own caps if you want a zebra P.

It really is a great looking bass. I love ESP for their quirky designs.

That’s why I want to hang around him hoping it would rub off his good taste a bit. Lol.

At this point if the two of you hung out you would spontaneously form the next Sweetwater

I’m usually not much of an upgrader, but I found a really good deal on some bass gear in a Canadian Reverb store, so I went for it: a chrome Hipshot bridge and “cosmo black” Gotoh tuning machines. To get free shipping (a sought-after commodity in Canada) I added string cleaning spray, liquid polish, an orange fret wrap, and Music Nomad cleaning wands to my order.

The bass selected for an upgrade could not possibly be less deserving: the Yamaha student bass I’ve had since the '90s & only keep around for 2 reasons: 1) sentimentality, and 2) it’s very light & thus a nice break from my regular p-bass. Okay, a kinda 3rd reason: it’s fun to decorate, since the finish is quite damaged in spots.

Here’s what it looked like a few hours ago:

A comparison of the two bridges:

(It doesn’t show in this pic so much, but the old one is actually rusted in spots! :open_mouth: )

And after a thorough de-gunking, here are the new tuning machines (old ones were just standard chrome Y tuners, nothing fancy):

And the new bridge installed:

It’s a bit big on that little Yamaha body, going a bit past the bevelled bottom edge, but it looks kinda cool that way! It’s a franken-bass anyway, might as well enjoy it.

Doing a setup was frustrating but fun: I haven’t really done one myself in years. Scrambled to find a ruler with millimetre measurements in my apartment. Had to swap out for a shorter screw (for intonation) on the E string. Kept my same ol’ flatwound strings. They’re only 3 years old - hardly broken in.

This rinky-dink bass sounds bloody EXPENSIVE now. Way punchier sound, way less extraneous vibration (which I didn’t notice until it was gone).

Bon weekend!

Yeah that is very normal for the Hipshot bridge.
Great job.
Love the MuchMusic sticker!

That’s nice. I own many guitars but the one I always take when I’m playing for a quick noodling is a Squier Vintage Modified Cabronita. I own 6 Telecaster’s but this Squier has a big advantage : thanks to its basswood body, it’s much lighter than then Fender’s. Also a very comfortable neck ; those Vintage Modified were even a bit better than the current Classic Vibe in my opinion.

Anyway, the light weight is really something I appreciate for a comfortable noodling.
