As you know, Beginner to Badass has helped tons of people get stage ready in a surprisingly short time… but there’s no evidence of that on our sales page. [derp]
So we’re working on bulking it up with video+photo evidence of people like YOU out there being badass after the course. Can you B2B students help me out by sharing photos or video of your band or jam buddies playing music?
This is a way you can help other people have their own future musical successes, just by sharing your own. Let 'er rip!
@JoshFossgreen, I started B2B at the back end of August ‘23 - never played, or even picked up a bass before that. I got a band going at the beginning of ‘24, although in reality, we’ve been practicing as a 4 piece since mid-April.
These videos are of us rehearsing - the sound isn’t great as they were recorded directly on an iPhone, rather than through a mixing console. I could get better recordings at our next rehearsal, if you wanted them.
We are playing our first gig on Saturday.
The Invertants - She Sells Sanctuary cover (The Cult)
The Invertants - Teenage Kicks cover (The Undertones)
Glad to (try to) help, for once. A couple of questions first:
do videos and pictures from smartphones make sense in this case, especially when shot in the dark? I might have a few suitable high-quality pictures, but only (rather pixelated) smartphone videos
how would you protect other people’s identity, for example in a video with a band mate? People from Germany tend to get really upset if their privacy is somehow violated (and sometimes rightfully so), therefore should possibly have to ask for permission…
Only incidentally on-topic: I can attest that good technique learned thanks to B2B really came in handy even a few years down the line… almost 4-hours gig, no pain or (bass-related) issues to keep going 'till the end
Thanks! These recordings are fine, although what’s most useful to me would be normal vid footage without the cartoon/drawn effect on top. (to help people see it’s really real students playing)
Congrats!
pixely smartphone is totally okay, we’re looking for real life vibes not production studio
In that case, yeah it would be good to ask permission from your bandmates. We won’t be actually “publishing” these, they’ll just be linked from YT or wherever, so technically no new privacy concerns are being added beyond having the footage on YT anyway.
Yeah it makes sense… if there was anything on YT
Now that I think about it, it’s weird how little online presence we have, with both bands. The gigs just came out of personal connections or word of mouth
But there should be some good footage from the last gig to fill some of that void, I’ll copy the link here once something is ready, instead of “raw material” as I first thought
Always small nuggets of things that can be played directly are the way to go.
I’ve played guitar very badly for some years in the past. Then some 3/4 years ago I started using a bass to play with rocksmith that dictates where to hit the strings on which frets but doesn’t teach you how to learn music. That was until October 2023 when I started B2B which I haven’t yet finished.
But just at the beginning of 2024 I was invited to rehearse with a cover band casually at a social party just by chance and hey, I went to rehearse for this newly formed power trio and I thought they’d kick me out, and to my very surprise, they still invite me around weekly. So that’s a huge win.
This has been my major pleasure in life to be able to play in a band. I’ve run a marathon, did snowboarding and surfing, studied for graduate and masters degrees, working in something I like (it’s in the music industry) and I got married and have two kids. So this being one of the top things ever is huge, at least to me. Again thanks!
I’ve got a crappy video of rehearsal in Spanish and the bass is barely audible. Let me know if you want another video later on.
Ps. I tried to upload the video from my phone, but the format is improper. I checked later even with PC and no video seems good format. Let me post a pic and then we can sync later if I can send you a video through another medium.
Ps2. Please let us know when you post this.
We had a photographer with a video camera and half-decent mic at our most recent gig, and managed to get the whole set with reasonably good sound quality (first time for everything )!
