I got an audition. The band is run by a dude i went to High School with. They have been looking for a bassist for a bit, so its basically mine to lose. The keyboard has been doing the bass for them. Its guitar, keys, and drums. Mostly happy hour bar gigs. Wish me well and drop some pointers that will come in handy if you have any.
Here’s their set list. Ill probably join after summer if all goes well.
Looks like a great happy hour set list!
Listen to the songs as much as possible!
I always make charts if I don’t have time to memorize them all by the first rehearsal.
Anything you jot down to remember key things about songs is worth while.
Let us know how it goes!
I’ve had more success with paper, as I find it easier and more reliable than a device. I print out one page for each song and number the pages in the order of the set list. If a song runs over one page, I may print on the backside.
If you use a device, don’t rely on any internet connections - and have the files organized in an easy to find location and with an easy to use app. It’s a headache if you have to scroll through onedrive folders and start wondering “where is that version we played last week?”
Still, I’d be interested in cool solutions for devices!
I use paper.
I played with a great music director and keyboardist who only ever brought an ipad.
Whatever you like.
Here’s an example of a chart the way I do them when I’m working songs out for a gig or a band.
This is messy, as it was just for me, so I didn’t worry if made sense to anyone else:
Like Gio, I’m a paper guy. Started a jazz/fusion group for fun only last spring to play one set concerts. A few originals and the rest instrumental covers. We used this format to keep everyone up to speed on arrangements. We had monthly rehearsals adding a few new tunes each month. “Here’s the arrangement. Learn your part.”
One of the best reminders I think I saw on Bass Buzz…
“Practice is what you do at home. Rehearsals are for playing what everyone knows.”
With just one set/12 tunes there’s no need for having iPhone/iPad or paper cheat-sheet on stage. We tend to transition from one arrangement to the next with few breaks between. Our sax player reminds us of what’s next when a longer break happens.
The arrangement format worked to help everyone focus on the big picture. Played our first concert after eight rehearsals, recorded a ten tune CD a month later. Took a few months off, then played again last week. No fame or fortune. Just music for the fun of it.
Had an informal jam with a couple of the guys in the band. Played a few of the songs from the set list that i learned. Jammed a few others that we knew or were easy to follow along with like “No one to run with” allmen bros, and “1st tube” by phish and “midnight moonlight” a la’ JGB.
Felt pretty good overall, with my own playing. The other guys were more familiar with each other and the music. I got invited back for next week, so thats a plus. I think it’ll be the full band next time. My boss katana 210 was easily able to keep up in the mix. They also have a decent PA set up to help if I need more power. So far so good. I just need to learn the music. The charts were really nice to have.
Way to go Joe!
Being invited back says a lot. And nothing helps you learn faster than a deadline to perform. You have a week to get invited back again. I’m betting that will be the incentive for you to learn those songs.
Lucky…my band i’m with in highschool(joined for fun), plays shite, like Yung kai, Cafune, sean kingston and more modern day crap…I mostly improv the basslines, so that makes it more, fun for me
Good luck, and have fun!
Well sorry from OP as I didn’t wanna hijack this topic but couldn’t find any (more) suitable place to share that I’ve lost my virginity for good.
That is: first time ever played thru an 8x10 config…. Wanted to test how it sounds/feels and TBH it’s soooooo damn good…. Here’s the config (OK, not Ampeg tho):
Well this is actually happening! 1st gig is a week from Saturday. It will be 2 weeks shy of a year and 4 months learning the setlist. My daughter is going to video the show. I’m super excited. I wouldn’t be remotely as far along if it wasn’t for B2B. Thanks to the Bass Buzz community and @JoshFossgreen for your vision and work.
