Well today was supposed to be a NBD

I decided to check the set up on the Fender Jazz I purchased recently, since the shop claimed they set up every guitar they get into the shop I didn’t see it as priority. The neck relief was ~1/32” (0.8mm) and the action height was 1/8” (3.2mm). Is it common for shops to set relief and action high? I adjusted the neck relief to the Fender recommended 0.3mm and was able to get the action to 2mm with no buzzing at all. Intonation was fine after my adjustments.

They did a pretty bad job in their setup.

I can only imagine your disappointment: you shell out a fair bit for the new “toy” and it lets you down on multiple points. And I bet you were trying to convince yourself the whole time that it didn’t really matter, that if you squinted enough you couldn’t see the deficiencies…

Is it representative of MIA Fender in total? Maybe it’s just bad luck.

I have only ever owned one MIA Fender and that is the Geddy Lee Signature model, which I bought (online) last year.

In terms of construction, punch and looks, it’s flat-out the best bass I have owned in 30-odd years of playing. It’s the equal and more of my only other bass - a CIJ (they were always “Crafted” in Japan, not “Made” - no idea!) Geddy Lee Signature from 2009. And that is one well made, if heavy, bass.

I show the receipt from 2009 just to make us all weep at the effect of inflation!

There’s both Crafted and Made and this denotes the manufacturer. CIJ Fenders were made by Tokai Gakki and were a run between the two stints of MIJ.

MIJ Fender = made by Fujigen Gakki, both in the ‘80s and (AFAIK) today, since 2014 or so.

If you can always do it yourself, it’s your instrument, the shop can set it up but most of the time the setup will be okay (just)
There will ba a limited time spend on this , time is money…
That is the reason I always do things like that myself, I’m not better than the person in the musicstore but I will gladly spend 2 hours restringing, intonating , adjusting the truss rod etc on my own bass ( not in that order, I know ) time the person at the musicstore does not have.

Ah, OK, thanks, didn’t know that. So I have a 2009 CIJ.

Yeah, making the adjustments isn’t difficult, and I did set it up myself after finding they’d set it up so high. I’m actually not that surprised the action was high, I’m more surprised the neck relief was so high to begin with.
