Thanks for the trivia. It inspired me to check TCM’s website, where I further learned that:

  • This 1932 film was directed by James Whale, the director of the horror classics Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, and Bride of Frankenstein. The Old Dark House was released between the first two of those films.
  • It also stars Boris Karloff as the butler (his actual first top billing in a film, and his butler character “inspired cartoonist Charles Addams to create the character that would later come to be known as Lurch on TV’s The Addams Family.”). The Old Dark House also featured film stars Melvyn Douglas and Charles Laughton.
  • The now-old plot of “a group of travelers caught in a torrential downpour”. . . who “seek shelter in a gothic mansion that’s populated by a group of oddly hospitable weirdoes” was later used in films such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show and others.
  • James Cameron saw this film and enjoyed Gloria Stuart’s “amusing audio commentary” on the Laserdisc, which led to him casting her in his film Titanic.

Looks like a film worth trying to see! I believe no bass players were harmed in the filming of this picture.

You are correct, sir! Good music.

have mentioned it before but this song still slaps - simple but excellent bassline - here is a live version:

The movie is iconic. It brought together the elements of the cinematic ghost story together for the first time. I was perhaps brief in my what I said, but it’s a good movie to watch as well. Karloff slayed it

I’d like to see it. TCM (Turner Classic Movies) used to have a feature on their website, which allowed you to set up an email reminder for a movie that was scheduled to be shown in the future, but that disappeared when they redesigned their website a year or two ago. So I’ll just have to keep my eyes open and hope I see it scheduled. Thanks for bringing it up, as I had not heard of it before!

Here’s to a good 2023 for Team Shachi. They would be celebrating their 10th anniversary this year if they could. But they were cancelled, or graduated as they say in Japan, and their old label won’t let them celebrate.

Japan has a huge kawaii (cute) culture, and maximum kawaiiness happens around 16. When Babymetal turned 18, there was a big cry from the Japanese fans that they lost all their cuteness. When Team Shachi got too old, they were graduated. Their producer moved on, they were dropped by the label, they went from selling out arenas to retired. At 20, because they reached their shelf life.

But not all the girls were ready to retire. They reformed with a new name, started writing their own music and doing their own choreography. About 6 months ago they started their own record label.

I love it when someone defies the system. Hope they find continued success running their own show.

It’s true and super toxic. I basically loathe the whole idol scene because of it. The fans can be super skeevy too.

This is one reason I really respect people like Nakata - he invest in artists for their whole careers and most of his are still going strong well into their 30’s and beyond. It’s sad that this is unusual and progress, but, well, good for him and his artists.

Same goes for Gacharic Spin; they still have super successful music careers now, mid-30s.

Band Maid also helped pioneer the whole kawaii metal genre but was a sendup of the whole akiba culture from the beginning, so of course they are ageless; still going strong in what must be their late '20s/early '30s minimum now.

It’s basically the pop idols that “graduate”, Logan’s Run style.

Babymetal has been called the “band you can’t know” because they refuse to meet fans, even when they were in the Idol scene
There is such a dark side to the idol business I won’t even get into. You know what I mean.

When Su was 15 she was graduated from Sakura Gakuin. This is how she went out. Tell me it’s not loaded with metaphors

One of the things I love about these ladies (and Band Maid) is how they are fighting back

Being in these forums and taking this course (among others) certainly has improved my music trivia scores on cruise ships.

Here is what I am currently listening to. I introduce you all to the Colorado band The String Cheese Incident. The boys were on fire this 2022 calendar year. They are know for long jams, stage theatrics , and cover tunes shuffled through original tracks.

This particular video is 'Can’t Find My Way Home > Way Back Home. Again, this would be another style of a cover tune leading into an original. Click HD, go full screen, and turn it up.

Happy 2023,
Cheers

Right now, I am listening to the silence of my office as I try to convince myself I need to get some actual work done.

The fact I’m posting about it here on the BassBuzz forums should clearly indicate I am failing at said convincing.

That is certainly a departure in musical style from what I’ve seen of Baby Metal. I bet they could put together some killer video game songs.

If that’s your thing, I think you would really like Unlucky Morpheus

Team Shachi has a video game (and theme for it)

Babymetal has been associated with video games too

and they’re in Super Mario Maker

Tiny Tina looks kind of fun.

I attempted to listen to The Elder by Kiss while stripping the carb on the quad but I’m not totally sold tbh
