I’m mixed. It depends a lot on the specific yeast strain, too. Some throw more spice notes, others more banana. I prefer more spice notes. I enjoy Ayinger’s hefe for that reason. Don’t care for Paulaner because it’s very over-ripe banana. I use the Weihenstephaner strain for my hefe as a very nice and classic balance.
When I lived in Germany, I really liked Schneider Kristallweizen. Just a filtered version of their hefe. Same notes, but just turned down from an 8 to a 6.
I get that. I am kind of the opposite- I really dislike the spicier hefes, they taste kind of tangy to me, and these days all hefes give me kind of an upset stomach too.
Hefes are immensely popular in southern Germany (where I am from originally), but I personally never liked them/how they tasted.
Having tried all kinds of beers over the years, I tend to come back to dark lagers and (I)PAs as my favorites.
I went through a big hefeweizen phase in my early twenties where they were my favorite style. I still like a hefe now, but I’d pick a few other styles as my favorites now.
I like hefe’s more than the hop monsters they call IPA’s, but I gotta limit how often I drink one (should buy some, it’s been a few years) because it upsets the tummy now also.
That’s a tasty beer, but unfortunately founders has settled multiple credible seeming lawsuits for racial discrimination so I’m not willing to give them my money.
Situationally not a bad plan at all, no shame there

A classic! I’ve never actually had it but numerous friends love it. I’m more a bourbon or rye guy than scotch, when it comes to whiskey.
Reminds me, while my bestie was in town I wanted to take him to the New York Grill, a la the bar in “Lost in Translation”, but it’s closed for a year. So we went to a decent alternative, the bar atop the Keio Plaza hotel. My two top tier drinks:
Blackened Old Fashioned - a double with Four Roses Black, Fuji Single Malt, Abbotts Bitters, Orange, Sugar, and Bamboo charcoal.
Vermont Julep - Whistlepig, Apple pie syrup, maple syrup, mint
The Julep sounds weird but it was so damn good. The Old Fashioned was of course awesome - Four Roses Black is a Japan-only blended bourbon that really only shares the label name with normal Four Roses, a definite step up.
I was in Tokyo on business a while back and our Japanese host had arranged dinner in the hotel with the bar (Park Hyatt??) and of course I had the bright idea to go up to the bar after dinner (I mean we just had to, right!?). I was also good friends with the host and wanted to thank him personally by treating him to a nice whiskey. Well, that was without exaggeration the most expensive drink I have ever treated anyone to ![]()
Totally worth it though!!
I’ve been there twice, great place. Not a place you usually go on any given weekend though yeah ![]()
This is my go-to Smoked Old Fashioned. Done table-side and entirely badass.
I spec Blanton’s bourbon for mine. Too, too good.
Nice, always a good sign when the bar uses ice cubes like that.
Yep, this place rocks hard.
Looking forward to Thanksgiving dinner there. It’s a long-standing tradition for me and my lady.
I’m a Canadian 100% rye whisky diehard… but really, im trysexual for anything whisky. The Glen was a birthday present.
