True. But, man, do they deliver.
And that’s a very VERY vague definition. In most cases, normally made absinthe falls well within the “thujone-free” guidelines.
One of the things that really got it the bad reputation was that, when it was at the height of its popularity, there were some really shady distilling methods being used. Most frequent was the use of lead tubing. The majority of people having mental problems from Absinthe were actually suffering from lead poisoning.
Another fun fact: the madness and death from Absinthe was referred to in medical records as “absinthism”. The effects, as listed, bore striking resemblance to advanced Syphilis. Many doctors would actually mark absinthism on the death certificates of people that died from Syphilis as a way of letting the surviving family keep some dignity. So the actual death count directly related to absinthe are…iffy.
The great Max Miller did an episode on the history of the ban and such. Worth a watch.

I’m from south eastern US, where I grew up on iced tea. I am very rarely with out an iced tea in hand.
Alcohol very rarely and becoming even rarer the older I get. It’s not worth the dehydration, medication interference and loose tongue that gets me in trouble.
dehydration, medication interference and loose tongue
Simple fixes, man.
Drink plenty of water, meds are over-rated, and…what’d you call me?!
As my age has crept up, and after I moved to the back of beyond so stopped going to the pub, I’ve found it affects me more in the ways you can tolerate when you’re getting the buzz, but without the buzz. What’s the point?
Yeah. This is a big reason I don’t drink any more. It’s just not fun any more.
Absinthe: I have had actual Absinthe in the US, it’s obtainable. It’s one of those things like Manchego, where it can be made or imported but only under strict guidelines. With Absinthe, much more than thujone, the actual health issue that got it banned was methanol from shady and careless distillers causing people to go blind. Not an issue these days. And the Absinthe I had ('80s) was full on wormwood/thujone-enabed AFAIK.
It’s okay. It does somewhat live up to the hype.
I long since stopped drinking for the ‘fun’; simply doesn’t balance with the next morning any longer! I do still drink though, but purely for the taste which is why I love wine, but I only have one glass in an evening and I truly savour every mouthful from that glass (currently a glorious Chianti!). A bottle lasts me at least 4 days.
As I’m a 'good guy’s I’ll keep sipping for you all. No need for thanks.

I’m right there with you. I very much enjoy raising a glass or bottle in the evening with my sweetheart. Cheers!
look what showed up today for my sipping pleasure (after my grinder gets here and i learn how to use it that is).
Woulda loved to be there.
Classy AF drinking my super special Old Fashioned from one of these bad boys.
(When making an Old Fashioned: Instead of sugar, trying using Liqueur 43. Sweetens it just the same but you get more alcohol AND a bonus lovely vanilla flavor.)
Liqueur 43
that might be a solid replacement for simple syrup in general.
I usually sip on a California red when I’m practicing bass, but wanted to share our collection from the Scottish Malt Whiskey Society. I love a good peat!
Ah, no hope for me then. I’m bad to the bottom of the teacup.
Some years ago I was bought a bottle of Big Peat - it was the most full-on peaty whiskey I’ve ever tasted, and completely wasted on me as I really don’t enjoy most of them. Bit of a shame, what with living along the lane from a distillery.
My new kilt
I have one or two observations… (but I’ll keep 'em to myself). Not sure I’ve got a pic on the computer of me in mine - it may be a whole new thread too.
(found them)
(sorry)
Some great bottles there.
