What are you smoking?

Have you actually read the replies in this thread? The only thing it encourages people to smoke are meat and beverages.

After the question was asked, of the first 5 replies - 3 are, “I used to smoke, but gave it up, and am happy with that choice,” 1 is, “I used to smoke cigarettes, but cut way back to vaping, and am very happy with that choice,” and one is, "I very occasionally have a cigar or light a pipe. Then we start talking about smoking barbecue. Then Lanny complains, and everyone goes, “WTF?”

You can smoke barbecue? Yay!

How many goodly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, that has such people in’t!

I’ve read PIHKAL, but really need to read TIHKAL. Guy is a freaking legend.

It’s where I got the name for the plugin thread

I guess technically the original is… Proust, I think? I got it from Shulgin though.

Is also great! I have both … 50% autobiography, 50% recipes

PIHKAL was better in the autobiography part…

I wasn’t going to post in this thread.

I am a… vehement non-smoker, of all types. Smoking tobacco took my mom via lung cancer. And her brother, my uncle. The day before she died, unable to talk because they couldn’t pump in enough oxygen to keep her brain satiated, she was still bringing her fingers to her mouth as if she was happily smoking away. Nah, fuck that noise. I’m out.

(That said, as a quick aside, I will fight for your right to smoke whatever you want, as long as it only affects you. It’s not my place to say what you can and can’t do with your own body in the privacy of your own home.)

Anyway! I wasn’t going to post in this thread because smoking isn’t my thing, and I didn’t want to detract from the conversation. I guess the reason I’m posting now is to say to @Lanny that… people are going to post off-topic stuff that we may not like, and it’s totally OK to ignore those threads and still enjoy the rest of the forum.

You know, for whatever my $.02 is worth.

i think it’s on target. i mean, i don’t smoke, i don’t do drugs, and i drink a lot. any one of these might be taken by people to be a good thing, a bad thing or they might not care at all what i do. and that’s ok. it’s a public forum, that’s kind of the way it works. to voice opinions, ideas, and viewpoints that might be different from everyone else. if they were all the same than you really wouldn’t need a forum would you.

Agree that this is just fine and on target.

I lost both my parents to lung cancer. I’ll never smoke. That said I think people are free to choose whatever vices they want. I am not the Vice Police.

I too used to smoke, but no longer do. I started with clove cigarettes in college, and only smoked them at parties on the weekend. Then eventually I was smoking regular cigarettes daily. I think I got up to a half pack a day before I quit.

BTW if you are a current smoker and want to quit, I highly recommend the nicotine patches. I tried to quit and failed numerous times, and I was finally able to quit for real using the patches. They really helped a lot.

I started smoking cannabis around the same time I started cigarettes. Eventually I changed to using a vaporizer due to the health benefits. Now I use edibles as they’re even healthier than vaporizing. I’m lucky to live in a state where cannabis is legal, and I get some great gummies that are (relatively) low in sugar, vegan, and have no artificial sweeteners, colors, or flavors. If you live in Washington, the brand is Binske, if you want to check them out.

If you are a current smoker and want to quit i would try Stop Smoking the Easy Way by Allen Carr. I had smoked a pack a day for 20 years and gave up by the end of the book, a days read.
It’ s cheaper than gum or patches and takes away all the little mechanisms you use to continue smoking. We allow ourselves to be convinced nicotine addiction is hard to overcome, it isn’t. A little will power will over come it. Any body who has played a reasonable rendition of Billy Jean is more than capable of stopping smoking without external aid

This is what I’m smoking today…smallish brisket. Also, I’ve seen a couple of posts indicating vaping as a healthier alternative to cigarettes. I’m not one to judge. I think people should make their own choices. But, I totally disagree with that premise. I’ve seen teenagers with their lungs destroyed by vaping. I’m not an expert on the mechanism/process of vaping. I’m not trying to start a debate or cause controversy. But I know what I’ve seen professionally and feel like I really should say something. Sorry for the rant.

Also, I really like this forum. I haven’t been on here long. From what I’ve seen, It’s got a great, supportive, civil vibe, with tons of great information for a beginner bassist like me. hope everyone has a great Saturday!

I think much of that has to do with how what’s being vaped is formulated. A lot of vape… juices(?)… include diacetyl in them which can build up in the lungs. (I can go on about Diacetyl, as it is the most common off-flavor in beer. It is used as buttery flavoring in foods.)

I think it is safe to say that vaping isn’t “healthy”, but that it lacks some of the problems of smoking.

I prefer pen cartridges for marijuana because they hit more quickly and fade out sooner. I am not a big marijuana user, and pen carts allow me to dial in more precisely how strong of an effect I want, and more likely for it to fade out before I fall asleep. Sometimes all I want is “half a hit” to take the edge off if I’m anxious.

I also prefer the high of a good live resin cart over edibles. Your body processes the THC differently. I find inhaling gets a more holistic feeling and is often better if I want a “music appreciation” sort of head high, where edibles give me a generic “buzz”.

Wife prefers edibles because they don’t make her cough. Often what we’ll do on a weekend is take 1/2 or 3/4 of an edible to undershoot, then top off with a pen cart.

Don't click here if you're underage or sensitive to the topic. DO click here if you want to read about dry herb vaping

My preferred method is dry-herb vaping for several reasons. There’s not a single bit of “vape juice” in it. It’s as “natural” as possible. It tastes fantastic, rather than tasting the byproducts of combustion, you are tasting the flower. While “nothing but air in the lungs” is the best policy for physical health, I’m capable of making an informed decision here and I do feel that dry-herb vaping is superior in this aspect to combustion of any kind or the mystery chemicals in a vape cartridge. Plus, you get the full terpene profile and any entourage effect that brings with it. The Dynavap I use is a similar form-factor to a one-hitter, and I can use very small amounts if desired. Or use the Volcano and have a party. Whatevs. Edibles are great, except for the unpredictability of onset and the extra calories.

To each their own. Do what you will - no kink shaming here. It’s not for everyone, and everyone is free to make their own decisions about such things.

My thing with vaping is it smells so damn bad it actually makes me wish people would go back to smoking. So nasty when a bunch of teens get on a train just after vaping, smelling the whole place up like burnt fruit or whatever other dubious crap flavors are targeting the youngs to get them addicted to nicotine these days.

There’s a certain type of vape I keep smelling - I don’t think it’s specifically scented, it’s not like fruit etc - but it makes me so nauseous, I also think I’d prefer to smell actual cigarettes :upside_down_face:

Crazy, right? The fix is so damn bad it has me wishing for the original problem it tried to solve

I’m very glad we’re past the days of smoking indoors though, those scents might make me sick but at least they don’t stick around. I was really surprised when I went to Berlin recently how many bars still allow smoking inside!

I do remember when the smoking ban came in, how awful my regular rock club stank though  it revealed the cheesy feet smell lurking beneath :+1:

Oh yeah, big time. Indoor smoking bans are one of the best things that has ever happened to restaurants and bars.

At my last job, when vaping first started becoming a thing, my boss would go into the server room and vape.

“It’s not smoking,” he’d say, “it’s just water vapor.”

Let’s just put aside that he was VAPING IN THE SERVER ROOM… my point is that there was something in that “vape juice” he used that gave me the worst headaches. Almost migraine level. Every time.

In addition to being my boss, he was also (and still is) one of my best friends of like… 35 years or something. So, I asked him to stop, he refused, we argued about it, almost threw blows at each other, and walked away with no resolution. But he ultimately stopped vaping in the server room, lol.
