Not just you, man. I dropped SBL within the free trial period. Couldn’t hack the pointless small talk.
This is my sister-in-law’s band:
HOME | theresonators (rachelriznerandtheresonators.com)
My brother is Adam. He’s the guy with a beard, playing the Gibson Buckethead and sometimes a white Telecaster in the “Gallery” page pictures. Although now he plays a PRS and a Charvel. He’s a phenomenal guitarist. He’s also an outstanding artist as well.
He and Rachel came over a couple of weeks back. Family BBQ kinda thing. Anyway, he brought his new Charvel and his effects board. The idea was that we would jam a little bit. However, after hearing him play and make MY amp sound way better than I’ve ever made it sound, I backed out. I couldn’t jam with him. I felt like a stupid little kid holding a My First Bass Guitar from Fisher Price or something. I had no confidence and all, and I was so nervous at the thought of playing with someone so talented that I froze up.
Anyway. That’s my goal now… dunno if it’s long term or short term… but jamming with my brother is my goal.
I’ve flatlined and come back. My best advice @JustTim is jfdi - just effing do it
Life is too short
Besides he’s your brother. Not like you haven’t been embarrassed in front of him before. You got nothing to lose
…
Like, actual flatlined? Like… clinically flatlined?
Damn.
Yes clinically flatlined, resuscitated, out of body near death experience.
Wrote it up somewhere here on the forum
Go play with your brother dude
Is my friendly advice
So i sold a bass on Craigslist. Had this same thing happen. Some random guy wants a bass, but he obviously needs to test play it-and just kills it.
I was disheartened. Can’t think of a better word. That feeling of being a little kid holding the my first bass? Yeah, i get it.
But ask yourself-how long has he been playing? You’ll find it, it’s there. Go and play with him. What’s he gonna do, laugh at you? Even if that’s the case, laugh at yourself forest and take that off the table,
You got this. Keep it in the pocket and on the one. You know what to do.
You know what, your brother has a lot of playing under his belt. He is not there to take you out in a solo contest.
Pick a tempo, pick a key, or if that seems too hard, pick 3 notes in a chord (major or minor triad), and just hit roots, and let him jam ontop of that.
You will loosen up, and start to try to add 5th’s and 3rd-5th and 5th - octaves fills, and some other scale degrees here and there fir walking notes, and you WILL MAKE MISTAKES, but just keep the beat and play thru, if it trumps you, stop, collect, feel the beat, and jump back in.
He will just play on top of you, and if he wants a chord change, watch him pick out another 3 notes to play while he changes key, and then drop back in the pocket til you are comfortable in the new key.
He will make you sound good, and as you get more comfortable, you will start making him sound better, and then you change it up a little, and he will hold it down til you are comfortable, and…
Before you know it, you have an add on CL looking for people to jam with, or even to form a band or fir you to join a band.
Simple, stop thinking yourself out of it.
I realize it is intimidating but (unless you are an alcoholic / Adict like me) have a drink or puff and just do it.
I’m with @T_dub here. That’s great Advice. And while I’m also with Toby on abstaining from social lubricants, if you ain’t-hoist a point for us and make some noise
If you can, have at it.
If you cant, dont.
Easier said then done, but achievable
LOL, that was in September of last year. Evidently “short-term” for me means “over a year”.
So now that I’ve gotten through the BassBuzz course from soup to nuts, my short-term goals include learning more songs, and finding some people to play those songs with.
Of course, long-term goals include continuing to educate myself on the bass guitar in and of itself, and music in general. I’ve signed up for Fender Play, and I’m thinking about giving SBL a serious try (I did the free trial a month or so ago, and it looks to have a lot of good content… it’s just a bit pricey). I may also look into an in-person, face-to-face teacher.
Also, both short- and long-term goals including being happy with the gear that I have, and not constantly looking for the next “new shiny”. Although I do have a Zoom B1 Four on my Amazon wish list with an eye towards Christmas.
I cannot tell you how much SBL has helped me since graduating B2B. I almost gave up at first because it was a tremendous leap upward in ability. However, Scott listened to people that talked about B2B being a great beginner course and so he created, “The Beginners Pathway” There are several thousands of hours of lessons on his site. I am now working at Level 2 on Players Pathway. Just completed “September Leaves” and felt so proud when nailing it three times in a row with no flubs or errors. I still need to get it memorized but I have moved on to another song, “Sledgehammer”. Each song contains examples of concepts he is teaching, fingering, performance tips and a looper to work on hard areas. Money well spent. If I had listened to all the naysayers about Scott and his blathering, I would have missed out on a ton of good content.
Yeah, I mean, I can see their point. He tends to pontificate quite a bit and get a bit showy when he’s giving examples. I don’t mind that at all, but I can see where it could grind on some people.
He only does that in the free YT content for the most part. In a lesson he is succinct, witty and to the point.
Glad it’s working for you, Eddie.
Players here and everywhere are at different levels, and agreeing on teachers is more subjective than agreeing on bass strings.
Not everyone is going to like the same foods or football (futbol) teams, but the end result has to do the trick and work for you, nonetheless.
Best of luck.
Oh I didn’t find this to be the case at all. I paid the $179 bucks. Quickly realized it went right down the toilet. Noting I saw there I could sit through.
I did the SBL free trial of Player’s Path, and I checked out various lessons to see how the guy teaches. To his credit, Scott can obviously play. But his personality and approach are grating to me. Just goes to show that not everyone is for everyone.
Short Term, get back to my Metal Mastermind courses as well as Talking Bass courses. Medium Term, finish three original songs by January. I’m mostly a third there. Ish.
Long Term: Compete in the San Dimas Battle of the Bands.
Wyld Stallyns rides again!
Hell yes.
Gotta take out Primus and Wyld Stallyns!!
You can DOO IT!!!
