I actually think tort works very well with blackā¦ Maybe not with the maple fretboard.
This is not helpful to the question originally asked, but I wanted to drop a comment in favor of both sunburst basses and tortoise shell pickguards. Together.
There is no objectivity in bass design.
Be wild. Be free. The right person championing whatever unhinged aesthetic = hot style. Be that person.
