What fingers should I use?

What is the best fingering for: MONEY-PINK FLOYD

What finger would you use to play the B and F# (4th fret on the G and 4th fret on the D string).

Start on the 2nd fret with index finger ā€¦ then finger roll your 4th fret notes with the pinky. It takes practiceā€¦ but when you get itā€¦ you barely have to move your hand at all

Fret the 4th on the G-stringā€¦ with enough of the pinky hanging over to fret the 4th on the D stringā€¦ play the first oneā€¦ then change the pressure ( roll the pinky ) to play the lower note

EDIT: after that the rest of the riff is index on 2nd fretsā€¦ and your hand hasnā€™t moved!

Hope this helps

Yes it does. I like it. I have seen played different ways. The person teaching this to me wants me to use my 3rd finger on the G then pinky on the D. It is quit a stretch and work out for my small amateur hands and maybe that is the reason.

You could do it that way ā€¦ but WHY? place the pinky as if you were going to strum a F# (octave) power chord (both your 4th frets) and just play them separately  with the same fingerā€¦ its about being efficient

My index on the 2nd fret will move. I donā€™t have the reach yet,

once you get used to itā€¦ the index will only move from string to stringā€¦ this is a ā€˜box riffā€™ meaning you can play itā€¦ with literally no hand motion at allā€¦ all the notes are ā€˜in the boxā€™ a specified shape on the neck

I see exactly what you are saying.

Added benefit of learning finger rolling is it helps with muting unwanted string noise since you have fingers already positioned for next notes etcā€¦ its a good practice

I also switch the open string notes to 5th fret one string lower. I find that easier to play and itā€™s then just a straight forward transition when you take the same pattern up a couple of frets.

There is this as well ā€¦ lol! Knowing the notes and how to move to where you need to beā€¦ good tip

Edit: for beginners thoā€¦ that intro riffā€¦ is basically in the pentatonic boxā€¦ and very little movement neededā€¦

hmmm-never thought of that! thanks

If you are taking the course ā€¦ you will get familiar with the neck and the notes on it

Thatā€™s the one you should use. As the matter of fact itā€™s better to fret all of the notes and skip the open string. Is it a stretch, you bet but once your muscle memory is in place it would be so easy because when the chord change you just more your hand and repeat pattern.

You can micro shift your left hand so itā€™s not so much of a stretch. Itā€™s just some practice to build up your strength just say it with me ā€œWax on Wax offā€ :joy:

Break it down to group of note practice it piece by piece
You are going to roll your index finger so put your index over 2nd fret on E string and A string and start with A string 2nd fret
A string B-index 2nd fret
G string B-pinky 4th fret
D string F#-ring 4th fret back to
A string B-index 2nd fret

Next group
E string F# index 2nd fret
E string A pinky 5th fret
A string B index 2nd fret
A string D pinky 5th fret
A string B index 2nd fret
repeat.

Can you use open string? sure but thatā€™s another skills on it own to do. that successfully you need to lift so little to make it back to fretting in time. To me itā€™s more difficult pattern than fretting pattern. All you need is to build up your finger strength.

I know itā€™s so wordy to explain how to fret it, later when I have more time Iā€™ll make a short video explaining this pattern.

WAX ON WAX OFF
Hi @Al1885 Thanks! i suppose I have muddied things. . I am being instructed to use ring finger on G string B (4th fret) and pinky on D string F # (4th fret).

This is insanity.
Donā€™t do this.
No one will do this.
This is weird.

Do what @Al1885 suggested.
Thatā€™s a normal bass player way to play the bass.

This is how I play it, except, because I have a b******d pinky, I use the ring finger for the 5th fret notes notes instead of the pinky, which would be easier!

The two fourth fret ones I roll my ring finger but, strangely, I donā€™t for the two 2nd fret ones; I guess because Iā€™m micro shifting to get my ring finger to those 5th frets!

As for that I donā€™t think I could even do it. If I had to then it would be the other way round; pinky on the G and ring on the D. That I could do but it seems pointless. I suppose it almost makes sense if using those open strings but it certainly wonā€™t work when you have to play the same pattern up 5 frets.

My ring finger is my dumb oneā€¦ why I mostly use my pinky for rolls :stuck_out_tongue: lol

It does seem awkward to me. It was not how the bass covers on you tube were playing it. This was the reason for the question. WELL, I am INSANE :upside_down_face: and going practice it as I was instructed. I am going to incorporate @Al1885 and @HighlandBass recommendations to play fretted notes instead of open strings. One thing to note is that I am really feeling the stretch in my fingers and this is good!

Itā€™s better to do what you need to do now when everything is hard. Learning the right way puts your hands in the proper position and prevent injuries as well as future proof the technique.

Learning the alternative may seems easier now but down the road when you are skilled at plugging, fretting and playing by that time it would look like you are constantly cutting corners, lol.

My mentor was the opposite, he insisted that I fret every notes possible because it gives me the control over note duration. I remember years later when I started playing the chromatic fills with the open string I felt so liberated

Sadly itā€™s not just dumb (I could train that out) but arthritic and so I only use it when I really have to!
