What is/are your target song(s)?

If you’re anything like me, there were a few songs that you set up when you started the course as something you’d like to be able to play ‘one day’. I’m curious what y’all have in your heads as goals.

For me, I was interested in the couple below, and I test them out every once in awhile as I progress through the course. It’s kinda wild how much closer I am now than I was even a month ago.

“Lovely Day” - Bill Withers

“Waiting Room” - Fugazi

“Longview” - Green Day

I’d add “Billie Jean” to that list, but it’s become a bit of a nemesis, so I don’t speak its name any more.

A few of mine are:

  • Bela Lugosi’s Dead by Bauhaus. I could record this one now, but am waiting until a little closer to Halloween and I’m just enjoying having it down comfortably.
  • Only Shallow by My Bloody Valentine. Can play it but still struggle to make those chords sound good at full speed.
  • Transmission by Joy Division. Again, I can play it now but I’m still not satisfied with how it sounds.
  • Summertime Rolls by Jane’s Addiction. The bass line is easy enough. It’s harder to make it sound good.
  • Viet Nam by Minutemen. Not close. Mike Watt is pretty good.

Transmission and summertime are totally baller.

I want to learn 7 Nation Army soon, cause my buddy said I should learn it so we can play it together, which will probably be my first jam session lol

I also want to play the Barney Miller theme song (because I’m old)

Kiss Off by the Violent Femmes (some of the fretting looks crazy though, so I’ll probably be able to showcase a cover sometime in the 3rd quarter of 2035)

Situations by Slaughter & the Dogs (which will also be a while, as I intend to go through B2B doing finger style, and then go back through it to try and learn to use a plectrum)

I love Bill Withers. Was actually just listening to Lean on Me a few minutes ago

So… nothing? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

(People play that riff on bass, but there is no bass in the song. I actually wrote a whole new part to add bass when the first iteration of my band played it.)

Rio has such a great bassline. I pulled up In the Meantime at one point about a year ago and nope’d out of there real quick.

Bela Legosi’s Dead is on mine, too!

It’s pretty easy once you’re comfortable with playing octaves. Those few chords at the beginning are simple but you can skip them if needed.

I have it pretty solidly at ~80%-90% speed (until the bridge).

I need to revisit Rio.

I did a video cover of Kiss Off a couple years ago. It’s not too bad. Really fun actually. But I didn’t even bother with the solo, that’s still way out of my reach.

It’s true there was no bass in the original song. I read it was played on a guitar dropped an octave, through a pedal, to have it sound like a bass guitar. So I see no reason not to play it on bass. Maybe it should be played on bass.

The King of Guitars, if we’re being honest

Currently working on:

Barely getting the bass on the first, nailing the second but haven’t put the time in to do the guitar or vocals yet.

I should buy a mic… I’m pretty sure there’s enough vocal processing tools to fix me.

Just get a SM-58. Spending less is a bad plan and spending more is wasted headroom (at least at my level). It’s the P-bass of mics.

Owning up a little here. I’m a 45yo white dude. My plan is to get to a spot with some friends so I can play and sing Toxic by Brittany Spears in a pop punk cover.

I won’t rationalize it, I love that song unashamedly.

I use heavy fuzz and a ton of reverb. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Or…
