What is/are your target song(s)?

AFAIK you’re right, and it definitely should be played on bass - it sounds way better

Definitely one of my (very) long term goals - being able to play bass and sing lead vocals. I can’t even imagine being able to manage it for now - too much brain needs to be used to keep up with the bass, let alone having enough left to concentrate on singing

Good choice  That was the first bass line I learnt as well, for the same reason :+1:

Currently working on:

  • Talking Heads, Psycho Killer
  • Cream, Sunshine Of Your Love

For the future I’m planning to work on these:

  • The Pretty Reckless, Take Me Down (if I can figure out the notation from the tabs, so I’ve got rhythm as well as notes)
  • Elvis Costello, Pump It Up

From there I’ll probably carry on working on filling out to match the existing set list for our covers band.

This one is brutal. The main riff isn’t bad, but the chorus variations are rough. And it’s blazing fast. I’m still stymied by it.

I added this song to my list of target songs, though it seems difficult. But it is an awesome song. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: Mark from TalkingBass has a good video about it, and I enjoyed his analysis of the chord progression.

It might be easier to focus on learning one part at a time.

Yeah, I saw the TalkingBass video shortly after adding “Pump It Up” to the list. Mark does do a good breakdown of the bass line and I had a go at a couple of the parts, with limited initial success

As @BeerBaron said it’s very quick for my current lack of coordination , but I need to keep going back to it and slowly chip away at it …

My target song is Natural Mystic by Bob Marley & The Wailers.

I bought the movie Bob Marley One Love a few months ago. Enjoyed both the movie and the music. As a result I ended up buying the album Exodus with Bob Marley & The Wailers.

Really loved the bassline in the first song on the album, that I kept listening to. It’s a masterpiece in my opinion.

After a while I thought I would enjoy being able to play that baseline in the song, so found the BassBuzz course, bought a bass and an amp, signed up for the course, and after two months, I’m about to finish module 3.

Never played an instrument before and I’m a very slow learner, but having the best time of my life, while learning to play bass.

Welcome!

You can do a lot worse to start than learning “Family Man’s” bass lines for Marley!

Kelsey Gonzalez, bassist for Andeson Paak, calls that out as great lines to learn.

Speaking of which, “Come Down” is definitely on my list to revisit now that I’ve gotten stronger as a player.

I’ve got a couple -

The Damned - Wait for the Blackout (off the “original” “Black Album”…)

(main riff demoed by the man, himself)

The Jam - Down in the Tubestation at Midnight:

And to pick something still punk, but maybe a little on the “more straight-forward” than those two… Buzzcocks - What Do I Get?

I’ve got Pump It Up at about 85% speed. Or i did, until I put it aside. I should really go back to it.

Been working on this one. I just need to play it a bit more to get the changes down. I can play all the sections, but remembering which one is next is the hurdle i’m trying to get over. Some of the fills are a little fast too, I need to tighten those up.

And this is one that I’m currently working my way through. This will be fun to play when I get it down.

Great bass line.
It sounds almost casual and improvisatory, but it’s very very written.
I had to play it for the school fundraiser for my kids last March.
I never know what songs are going to get selected, and when that one came up I gave an initial eye roll…
But that is a great bass line.
Yet another great pop tune with a great bass line.

Here’s a cool surf rock cover of Toxic by the Surfrajettes with Sarah Butler playing the bass line on her Longhorn.

Pretty much anything by Rush. Currently working on Limelight, would love to get Working Man down, I play around with fragments of YYZ.

There are a few good covers floating around. There’s one by Minority 905 that’s pretty good.

Though this one, with Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Cheney (Chaney?), makes me laugh:

Limiting it to just three:

What is Hip - Any version but I really like the Tokyo Groove version
Wild Nights by Van Morrison

Dean Town by Vulfpeck

About 99% on Lovesick by Laufey, just working on refinement now. Easy one. My 13 son loves her music so I learned it for him.

About 80% on Coming Undone by Korn. Big fan of Fieldy but most of his stuff is beyond my current ability. This one is doable though.

Big contrast between these two!

My band are playing 70s themed birthday party next month. We are not a covers band

Set so far is:

Ballroom Blitz - Sweet

Pretty Vacant - Sex Pistols

Children of the Revolution - T Rex

Paranoid - Black Sabbath

Detroit Rock City - Kiss

Psycho Killer - Talking Heads

Lust for Life - Iggy Pop

Sharp Dressed Man - ZZ Top

School’s Out - Alice Cooper

Ace of Spades - Motorhead

Crazy Horses - The Osmonds

Shang a Lang - Bay City Rollers

Blitzkrieg Bop - Ramones

Mama Weer all Crazee Now - Slade

Bad Reputation - Joan Jett

Most of it is down. Hardest bass wise is probably the Slade tune - it moves around under the verse chords with some funny timing pretty quickly. It’s also the one we’ve worked on least at rehearsal, mainly cos my drummer doesn’t have a kit at home. Can’t blame him for that.

Also I’m playing Ace of Spades finger-style strumming. Sacrilegious, I know. I can’t use a pick :joy::sweat_smile:

I decided to learn bass just to mess around while hanging out. I’m a huge fan of Clutch, so learning anything from them is what I would consider to be my target songs.

I’d also say anything from Cliff Burton era Metallica.

Currently have a ton of fun doing the 50 song challenge. Not really my style, but still fun.

Rock on :sign_of_the_horns:

I’d really love to learn this:

But I can’t figure out the notes, really hoping on getting a better ear during the course :crossed_fingers: Does anyone know a tool that manages to export songs to sheet music?
