What song are you currently/next "working on"?

I posted this track a while back: Todd Snider - Joe's Blues - YouTube

I’ve been trying to figure out the bassline for it. I’ve got the main part down. It’s the bass during the chorus that’s killing me. I can pick out the bass in so many songs but, for some reason, I just lose the line in all the other instruments during the chorus.

It’s driving me crazy.

This. Rebel rebel by the amazing David bowie. Bowie has been a constant companion for so long. And i really love this tune-but i never really realized how disassociated (?) That bassline is in it.
What i mean is, when playing with the music it sounds great. It’s right there in the pocket. It fits really well in the mix. But playing it without the backing track? It was just plain strange. There are parts in it that just seem unsure or incomplete?
I’m no musicologist. But i wish i had a better understanding of how they came up with it.

If its really bugging you could try putting the song through the Moises app…you can do 5 songs a month on a free account and separate out a bass stem (plus vox, drums, and other stems)…you can then solo and have a listen to the bass…it will likely have more artifacts than indiana jones when on its own, but should still give you a pretty clear listen to the bassline for transcription purposes (which may prove useful here where the ‘other’ instruments are getting in the way of hearing)

I’ll definitely look into that. I really love bowie, so i want to learn it. I can isolate it on songsterr, but i don’t know many tabs you can just trust there. it’s not like they curate them. Ultimate guitar is the same. Literally anyone can post a tab. Idk about 911 tabs. I hear good things, but who can say.

Downloading it now! Thanks for the tip! Exclamation points!!

UG has “official” tabs, created by their “pros”. Generally speaking, they’re pretty good, or at least a pretty good starting point.

Starting a new season of school of rock - one hit wonders. Got I Melt With You which is alright. And then Take On Me…and the teacher suggests I slap for parts of it. Which is an interesting challenge. I tried out a pick for a song last time…might as well put in the hours for slapping. With the fall back that most people aren’t expecting a lot of slap bass in that song so I can bail out. But I hope I don’t.

“I want you back” by the Jackson 5. Killer bass line, I have the main part down just not smoothe yet, nor I fear all the syncopation correct. But my next project of a song

@Wombat-metal That’s an awesome song to work on. It took me a long long time to get it all dialed in. But totally worth the work.

If you want any links to the resources I used to help me learn it let me know.

It’s one of the 50 songs in the challenge but I’m nowhere near calling it done. Also I’m doing them in order and just wanted to learn it. I’m actually only on 11!

Also you can see in this post some other tunes I’m working on. It’s a bit of a jumble, and some sound issues, but it’s all fun.

Yeah, if you could link the resources I would appreciate it. Watching your video, you have different fingering than I’m using and it looks easier. I will probably work it out later but I would appreciate what you have, it’s a little tricksy

Hey @Wombat-metal I learned the breakdown of the song from Ian Allison’s fabulous video. All the music theory and minutia is in there.

For practicing I used this bass cover which follows the same fingering / note position as Ian.

It’s a lot of graft to put it all together, but completely worth it. @booker_t is also chipping away at this classic.

Today i was being lazy. So it was where the river flows by collective soul. Because i can add a little dirty sound and it feels good to play

I keep revisiting “Glide” by Pleasure. I first tried to learn it WAY too early in my bass journey and decided to hold off for a bit. Tried it again later and my slap work still wasn’t where it needed to be. I’ve been hyper-focusing heavily on slap for the past month and I think I’m at a point now where I should be able to get a bit further on it. I consider it one of my major milestone songs and learning it should give me the flash of light and the Final Fantasy level up audio.

Trying to branch out of my typical genres for my next song, and I was particularly hooked on the bass line to that Miley Cyrus song Flowers. I transcribed 75% of the song, then watched a cover on Youtube and it looks like I might have one or two notes wrong…I’m just gonna roll with my transcription since I’ve ingrained the patterns into my brain, and at worst I’m a half step off :man_shrugging:

should have it done by this weekend so check the covers thread!

I covered it a while back @Ant using existing covers with their scrolling tabs as a reference. That might save you some graft / enable you to check your homework.

Interesting, these tabs have you playing up around the 7th/8th fret…the cover I watched was by CoverSolutions and he’s usually on point but his tabs were different than these…:exploding_head:
