Hey anytime @booker_t lunch is good we can eat, lol.
This is fine planning, @booker_t . i dig your style.
That’s a beast on my best day. I had to shelve that one for later.
Haha, I even got the tone fairly close on the Zoom B1four ![]()
I had no idea such thing existed. Yes I will try this! Thank you!!
Oh shoot since I don’t have a tab, if I pull out a 5 string diagram and find the octaves on my 4 string, ain’t it the same thing?
I can read tab but that’s it honestly, so I’m no expert. But yeah with a string diagram you should probably be able to shift everything up to the next octave - slower than if you can find the tab and autoconvert, but perfectly workable. There are also people out there who will completely transcribe a song for you - and you can pick details like key or 5 string bass, etc. For like $30 they’ll give you sheet music and tab.
(Just saw a dude on YouTube who does this and was comparing the new AI transcribers - that don’t work that well yet - to what he can produce. But that’s where I learned this is a thing, so I don’t have any personal experience).
I used a guy’s service that was on fiverr for a song that I wasn’t sure of, and he delivered with 15$ an excellent project!
but if I can up the octave with the L shape we already know then I guess I should do that.
To be honest, the song sounds DOPE in 5-string. But I don’t see myself owning one at least for the next 2 years or so
I’m taking the easy path and sticking with clutch. Today it’s subtle hustle. It’s kinda silly. I been listening to these guys for at least 15 years-they are definitely a house favorite. And i just realised I’ve never learned the bass players name. I guess i don’t really need it, because i know that cat can lay it down.![]()
The Chain , Fleetwood Mac
Superstar by Sonic Youth wasn’t complicated but a pocket you could sit in very nicely
Joe Dart was one of the big reasons I got into bass (among other things, mind you). While I’m still working my way through the BtBA lessons, I’ve been fiddling around with some of his easier bass lines as well. I can play a debatably competent rendition of the first bit of “Beastly” as well as a couple of riffs he loves to use in various songs.
I’m currently working on a polish blues classic. It’s a complicated bassline with a complicated rhythm and a lot of parts are deceptively quick so far I got a part of it OK at 48bpm and almost OK at 60bpm (original is 80bpm). I wanna nail this part up to the solo at 60bpm before moving on to learn the next parts.
I recently started playing with some friends and this is one of the songs I wanted to learn to play with them (they know this one to a note by now, so I’m joining in at a point where everybody else knows what they’re doing :P)
The other one we picked is Fortunate Son by CCR, quite relaxing compared to this ![]()

Here’s a bassline I cant figure out that I’m always working on. The track is called “Lowlands” from Trials of the Blood Dragon OST. Put those two in the youtube search and it should be the first one. Bassline drops at :50s. Can someone please help me with this. I think this track would be fun to play along with. It definately made me want to jump on the bass again, just dont know where to start with this track
Finished transcribing this song today…what a pain in the ass! I went into this one really wanting to learn it but severely underestimating the complexity of the line. This took me the entire day. I was only able to practice playing it at speed for a couple of hours, so far I have learned the first 46 seconds lol.
The song is Australia by The Shins. Here’s what I can play so far (except the last 5 notes)

have a feeling this one is going to take a long time to master ![]()
I’ve been spending a lot of time going through a, eh, path for players on a different bass instruction site, but I decided it was time I started learning another full song. So I opted for “Making Plans for Nigel” by XTC. Great tune, once I get it down I’ll probably record a cover of it.
XTC is such a great band. Very clever songwriting, vastly underrated.
Morning update: A good sleep and a few hours of practice this morning, made it another 30 seconds into the song. There is just so much to keep track of in this song…however what a blast it is to play it once it all comes together.

1:11 in, only 2:46 to go ![]()
Agree! Partridge is a genius.
Having fun with Upside Down by Diana Ross. The bassline is repetitive but it’s just so cool and a good exercise for me (where I start off well then mess it up soon enough).
Starting practicing again this morning and was getting frustrated at some of the trickier parts in the song, when I realized…I tabbed it wrong. the notes were right but I did to myself what internet tabs always do to me - make the song unnecessarily difficult. The shitty part of course is that I ingrained the difficult way into my brain, so I spent all day un-learning and re-learning the right way. Now I have to rewrite my tabs and I am feeling pretty flustered.
Made it another full minute into the track though! Almost there, just a few more sections to learn and put together, then to play it without screwing up ![]()
