As a followup on this. I couldn’t figure out why this line was jumping all over the neck like it was, given the notes involved.
Knowing that online tabs can be quite suspect, I looked up a couple YT tab vids and discovered that what is on Songster is kind of crap. The song still gets up into 10th-12th fret territory, but it steps up there on roots/fifths/octaves shapes and it makes sense based on what the YT vids are showing, instead of jumping from 3rd fret of G string to 10th fret of E string to 3rd fret of A string to 12th fret of G. (Not exact notes, but you get the idea).
And it moves the verse riff to A&D strings instead of D&G and the tone sounds so much better.
You said you didn’t give a fuck about hockey
And I never saw someone say that before
You held my hand, and we walked home the long way
You were loosening my grip on Bobby Orr
That name came from our first ever gig. We didn’t have a band name at the time and were playing a backyard BBQ.
With about 10 mins to go our drummer hadn’t shown up. People were geting concerned. I jokingly said that I didn’t know the protocol as I’d never been in a band before so…
So, this is a bit different… It’s hard, really hard, but it’s worth digging into as I can learn a ton by working on it. It’s mainly a long balladesque bass melody in the beginning and then trying to stay out of the soloists way later.
Scott Devine is phrasing and ornamenting the sh*t out of the melody here… I don’t need to do it exactly like that (and can’t), but, again, it’s interesting to see what he does and how he does it; and I can work on that for a couple of months
I know playing up there is not “real bass” for many here, but I really dig it; forcing me to learn the fretboard up there alone is half the reward. And I really like the harmonic movements (often over pedal notes) here.
I’ve had to play up above the 12th many times when I played out…. One group had a “hit and miss” guitar player who (although a very good guitarist) liked to…. “Indulge”…??.. Anyway, knowing how to play up there is always good to know how to do because you’ll never know when you’ll need to…. Even if it’s to just help a song or two along…. However, if the group is hittin’ on all cylinders, I’ll stay totally within my area of play - above the 12th….
6 - 10 typically. Very few of them ever actually get recorded as covers. Or, I’ll get to a point with playing one where I’m not satisfied with where I’m at in that moment, then come back after a few months and see what I can do then. The New Order song that I recorded a few weeks ago is one of those. I started on that one last spring and revisited once in awhile until I was happy with how I played it.
A week or two ago, I mentioned somewhere here that I like playing more R&B-ish type songs even though I don’t listen to a lot of R&B. I decided now is the time to record one. I’ve been working on this for a few days now and I’ve got the shell of it worked out. I need to refine and work on details but I feel comfortable saying “I got it.”
I try to focus on actively learning a single song, but if there are parts I struggle with, I’ll have a crack at something else for a break. But it’s so easy to get distracted when you here a cool tune and want to learn that instead. I have a couple of songs that I haven’t played in a month due to this.
