Have you tried without the lyrics? Or do you practice without the lyrics anyway?
Most of the time, I find it easier to get familiar with a bass line when the lyrics are off. And for “What’s Up”, I can well imagine that the lyrics make it much harder to get into the bass line (not because of the voice of Linda Perry but because of the melody).
For a jam session in a couple of weeks:
With or Without You
Roxanne
Fascination Street
I’m working up the speed on Hysteria this week and started to get frustrated. I took a break from it today and learned Down on the Corner and Here Comes Your Man for a quick win to keep the spirits up. …and then dropped the strap as low as it would go, cranked it to eleven, and had a Blitzkrieg Bop of a time!! ![]()
Funny you mention that cause I’ve been working blitzkrieg bop
Not a hard song by any means but was trying to get my picking up to speed and just about there
I was trying to work up to it with a metronome but at a certain point I just stalled out and had to just try and keep up with the song to make any progress but almost there
Thanks for mentioning Fabienk’s bass line can be found at Songsterr.
I took a look, and the first half of the song is too hard for me (lots of 16th notes). The second half might be less difficult and more fun to practice.
Have you been practicing it? How are you doing so far?
If I understand correctly the notation, the upright arrows are string bends to approach the microtonal sound of Khn’s bass. It has also 16th note rests, staccato notes, slides, etc. I only use the free version of Songsterr, but the paid version allows the users to change the speed, which could be very useful.
This is a very cool song! I like the band a lot!
“A Mighty Fortress is Our God”, in “A”
I’ve been working on It’s my life by talk talk on and off for about three months and it’s coming together.
I also started learning Tom Sawyer last week. For a song I found so intimidating I’m not finding it too hard. Though I’m having to cheat with open strings in the fast bridge part.
Well tonight is the night to jam. Slight revision, we are doing Fascination Street, Roxanne, and Under the Milky Way. Been practicing pretty hard and feel confident. Had a run through with the singer this week and it went well…wish me luck!
Union of the Snake by Duran Duran. It’s SUPER fun and not as hard as some, uh, other Duran Duran songs.
The two hard ones I’ve been assigned in my group: Ain’t No Mountain High Enough and All Along the Watchtower. If anyone has a great resource to help me break those down, I’d be much obliged.
Resident transcriptionist, and all around awesome dude, @Tom_Read added this very song to his website recently.
