Funny thing is Muse bassist started as a guitarist (is a guitarist). He has a unique style for sure. Hysteria is a cool bassline.
I half assed learned Lee Van Cleef by Primus. Les style and note selection is so bizarre. If you want to get out of a box and expand your playing, Primus is a good way to go. Some songs or parts of songs are not so hard. The intro for To Defy the Laws of Tradition is a good exercise on string crossing and stretches your hand. Too Many Puppies helps you mix strumming with Slapping and isn’t too difficult. South Bound Pachyderm helps you learn a bit of right hand finger independence as you have you have to constantly play eighth notes with your index finger while playing the melody with your middle finger.
Because you can never have too many covers in the pipe, probably going to look at Dreams Never End next, while we wrap up three others.
This one is gonna be tough. Hooky plays this one on a Shergold 6-string bass. Those are tuned standard guitar, one octave down but still EADGBE. As a result this will be up in the high fret stratosphere, and there’s a lot of chord work too. One of them works out to be an open D string and 18th fret on the G. Another part works out to 146 bpm eighth notes alternating 17th fret E/18th fret G, for a nice string crossing workout. Good times, gonna take a while ![]()
Having discovered my love for speed, I started practicing Blitzkrieg Bop at the weekend and it’s actually going quite well. Not playing at the original 175 bpm but aiming for 131. Still need to get my timing right but maybe maybe I might make an appearance with my first post in the practice piece or cover thread fairly soon. Who knows…
Great song!
Got a first take on the drums, bass, and vocals. Really rough, especially the vocals. Need to retake the bass in a few parts too - the part at the start I can only do about 4 bars at a time, but the rest of the song is two or three takes. Vocal effects need work too.
Hard! Lots of chord work, almost all the way through. But not bad for a work night.
Hopefully my friend can add the guitar bits soon and make this an actual cover
I’ve got to learn some Steve Harris type galloping bass runs for one of our songs.
Erm. 16th notes at 135bpm is extremely hard
Just think of them as 270bpm eighth notes, if that helps
Or use a pick. Come to the dark side!
Haha, 270bpm 8th notes, I like it
I’ve tried dabbling with a pick, but it’s not for me - I’ve spent so long with fingers and still learning constantly with those.
I just can’t do runs and move about quick enough. I know it’s just something else to add to the learning basket, but my basket is currently full
Well spoken, @quadfather . . . I can say the exact same thing.
Years ago I used a pick exclusively . . . now I can’t. Go figure
I really need to add that to my learning basket, too! lol
Good luck to you and your band, Joe
Haha looks like everyone needs to sort their learning baskets out
You can’t play at all now with a pick? not even better than if you’d never tried it before?
Cheers - I’ll see if there’s an option to record this zoom gig we’re doing on friday. If there is, I’ll get a copy of it
I pretty much only use a pick at this point. I’ve come full circle.
Man, I’d love to see that! Hope you can get it. There is actually a thread for live performance…it doesn’t have much posted there yet!
Will definitely try! If it can be recorded, we’ll definitely record it and I’ll upload it.
Here’s the practice room, both lit and in live mode with the crazy lights ![]()
Love the soundproofing by your mic. This is a serious problem for me right now.
It takes a whole day to do a sheet of those eggboxes as it takes ages for the foam to dry. And then you’ve got to be very careful lifting them.
But it’s slowly turning into a better room over time.
I wish I had a picture of it on day 1 when we got it!
Do you mean you need to soundproof your environment? We’re doing it just for the acoustics as our room is off the beaten track so noise levels isn’t a problem. But boomy mics can be
Yeah I have to be very careful of noise in my place.
Ah right. It’s a shame isn’t it. Everyone in the world should be able to play music.
Well, if I ever become a famous megastar, I’ll buy everyone here their own studio
I’m pretty lucky over here, @howard . . . even though I’m in an apartment, all the walls are super insulated and noise isn’t a problem for me. Of course I don’t crank it up that much ![]()
@quadfather, we used to hot glue those egg cartons to the ceiling of the basement we practiced in . . .
Thanks for the memories!
Cheers
Joe
Glad to be of service
they’re still effective!
