I just recorded the 9th take of this song and I’m still not happy. I can’t seem to get it perfect. I’m too much of a perfectionist (Groan). On to take 10.
I hope to get it up on the “Post your Covers” thread by 2030
It takes me about 15 takes to get it right.
Sometimes I record dozens of times to try and master something then I think you know I am just learning and who cares put it out there and show your progress. So in short we do not need to be professionals because we are all students
I have no idea what you people are talking about
oops
(in case it isn’t obvious those are all punchins and retakes of things. That’s about 2/3 of one song
)
Ok, next up for us, some 180 BPM goodness.

Might take a while.
Aww yeah this one is super fun.
I have a head start because its main riff is part of my normal practice, but 180 BPM fingerstyle is gonna be a challenge regardless
Yeah that’s pretty full on even over 21 seconds! @howard
Probably will be my first cover on here, been working on it for the past three hours.
Fuckin’ chuggin’ eighth note open E city, especially on the opening. Can understand why a radio edit exists for this song.
Easy stuff, but all the recordings I’ve tried so far, I accidentally ‘octave’ the E string occassionally with the middle finger when I pluck. Got as far as the outro, made one tiny mistake, and that nullified the whole recording, lol
Plucking across more forcefully as well as adjusting my hand position to be a bit more aggressive seems to alleviate the problem. I’m dead tired though, and got to get up in the evening for work.
Not at all. No one needs to record everything in one take. Google “punch-in” ![]()
What DAW are you using? I actually use multiple tracks for this for convenience.
Trying out Reaper as of now.
Cool. I usually use a second track for recording and one for the parts I want to keep. Record as much as possible, promote the good parts to the “keep” track, and re-record the parts that sucked. And then keep doing this, refining the "keep’ track, until I am happy.
This is a pretty common recording technique. The nice thing is by the time you’re done you’ll have played the bassline so many times you can now play it live too, and you end up with as optimal a recording as you can do.
Thanks man!
There’s no mistake because it’s the original track.
I missed the key words ‘WILL BE’ your first cover . . . ![]()
I thought you were chugging along with it [lol]
My bad,
Joe
Well if you think that’s impressive, here’s me playing “Orion” just like Cliff Burton. I mean absolutely perfect. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think Cliff was playing.
;D (Just messing with you man.) ![]()
That’s cool @howard I’ve been doing the same thing, then saving the “good” track as take 1. But because I felt like I was cheating, I always record a “keeper” track from start to finish, even if it takes several tries.
It’s nice to know what you described is an acceptable method .
Like @juli0r I’ve been working on I Want You Back by Jackson 5. Started out as kind of my “Mt Everest” song and I’ve been hacking away at it off and on for a few months. The opening few bars definitely have some tricky fingering which is still difficult to nail at tempo, and the bridge is a whole different beast. I can hit maybe 50% of the notes there. Still a ton of fun to play along despite the flubs.
A couple of other “Everest” songs I’ll nail one day:
Muse - Hysteria
The Brothers Johnson - Stomp!
Pretty much all James Jamerson songs
“Hysteria” is my Holy Grail as well. If I ever manage to play that, I’ll be a happy man
Right now I’m practicing “Another brick in the wall”, which is a lot more within my capabilities at this point.
It’s recording music, there’s no such thing as cheating
The goal is to produce the best recording possible. All that matters is the finished product. There’s no bonus points for being able to do it in a single take - that’s what playing live is for.
