Charles is a multi-instrumentalist. He also graduated from the prestigious Berklee College of Music, no small feat, so he’s also a composer and arranger as well as a performer.
I’ve seen him masterfully finger pluck and play with a pick. He evolved his signature double-handed tapping style by incorporating his extensive piano experience from having been a child prodigy. He’s also written a book about how to double-tap.
The guy is musically prolific and talented as hell.
That’s true. He readily admits that he watched Davie504 and eventually reached out to him to ask if it was OK to emulate his comedy presentation on YT. Davie graciously agreed and even helped Charles get started, giving him production pointers, etc.
Charles still takes a page from the Davie playbook, but his costumed productions go far beyond just sitting in front of a camera. I read recently that Charles is considering hiring a video editor to help take some of the production load off his plate. I guess that means he’s raking in some dough from all the product endorsements he’s doing.
Charles got his big break on YouTube because of Davie.
I think Davie has been at it for over a decade and has 12.2 million subs so he is doing something that a lot of people like. I’m neutral to his YouTube persona, I just enjoy watching him play.
He has not posted in a month, so I wonder if he’s run out of ideas. He is very open about his struggle dealing with the stress of coming up with a new video every week, can’t be easy keeping that up for 11 years.
My understanding is that channels earn (very roughly) around $5 per 1000 views or thereabouts, so when you regularly have videos hitting hundreds of thousands or even millions on the view count, that’s a healthy passive income
Davie504’s actual net worth is not exactly known, but networthspot.com places it to be over $12.61 million with an estimated $3.15 million a year.
However, some people have suggested that Davie504’s net worth might possibly be much more than that. When we consider many sources of revenue, Davie504’s net worth could be as high as $17.65 million.
As much as I love a tangent (my previous manager actually intentionally added time to our meetings to allow for my diversions and meandering trains of thought)…
I feel we’ve strayed a little off topic
Also, my wife calls me square so I may as well live up to my reputation and be the one to be the buzzkill
I would vote medium scale because I have one and am therefore biased, but you’d be cutting out a lot of nice options as there’s more choice in the short scale camp as far as I can tell
Davie had a huge influence on me as well in wanting to pick up a bass. I agree he is 100% memer and it does get old sometimes but he is what he is. I like to be silly myself, so maybe that’s the connection I have with his channel. As others had said, when he collabs with other folks you can see little cracks in the personality he plays and his true self starts to show a bit.
The episode where he featured MINA from Japan really got me wanting to learn slap. So many amazing players in that video! Ayumu with the insane tapping was another excellent moment in that video!
Dude has 12M subs so he prob doesn’t have to worry too much about putting out tons of content these days.
I think the advice of putting as many basses in your hands is very worthwhile. I had pretty specific ideas of what I thought I wanted in a bass (mostly due to looks) and while I really wanted to import from Japan sight-unseen…I’m glad that I went to some local shops and found one that felt good in my hands.
That Japanese Bass is still calling to me though… dang GAS…
This is easily the worst part of Charles’ channel and I wish he would stop. It works for Davie but I don’t think it works well for Charles.
I like them both for different reasons, but really wish Charles would stop emulating Davie’s production style because I think he has more and different things to offer than that.
As is common; Davie got his from PewDiePie (though Davie was making a good start even at that point).
I do, too. But imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and he embarked on his YT channel content with Davie’s help and blessings.
I think Charles will mature and deliver more serious content when/if there’s a market for it. For example, his second album contains some beautiful original compositions. But trying to make a living by marketing an indie album is not a good way to make a living. Instead, he’s increasingly getting product/service endorsement deals.
Some seriously talented musicians/composers like Jan Hammer and Mark Knopfler have turned to writing scores for movie and TV soundtracks. I would look into that seriously if I were in Charles’s shoes.
