What's Your DAI (Digital Audio Interface)?

This guy is fantastic!, great find! Lmao

He totally cracked me up

Haha, cool!

Funny thing, if I were in the market for a new DAI, I’d probably splurge for an SSL

If I had to buy a DAI now, I would possibly look at an Universal Audio like this one (or maybe the 4 input version) :

(Product page : Universal Audio Volt 276 – Thomann France)

but the location of the inputs/outputs and controls doesn’t fit the space where I place my DAI.

To be honest, I don’t have any complain to my Steinberg UR22C. In my opinion it’s a little bit better than a Focusrite, but still very similar.

And, while writing this, I just remember that I have a brand new Yamaha MW10C that I bought many years ago for a project that was cancelled. So this USB mixer is new, I’ve used it less than one hour just for testing purpose. It would be a relatively legit DAI. Also there is a nice analog compressor on this thing.

Yeah the Volt is a great choice.

Actually for me that would be substantially better than a Focusrite - direct monitor blend knob is a must for me.

Yeah! That would be effectively exactly how I use my Mackie. Plus then you get some cool stuff like the really flexible outputs and routing, and of course also the ability to use a mixer insert. I was doing that with a Bass POD for a while. Just more convenient to have all the cabling in one place, and having everything on top like that is just so nice.

Some Yamaha mixers have cool options with the inserts too - pre/post fader, pre/post input preamp, etc - might want to take a look, could probably do cool stuff with an outboard effects unit.

There’s also the “half click” trick where you only push a TS plug in halfway to engage just the send and then get a parallel out. You could presumably send this through processing and then back to a separate line in on the mixer, even - never tried that though.

Haha. I have that Tascam. The knobs aren’t a big deal. LOl

Its all about his delivery

I am sure the Tascam is fine

My annoying buzz is back… if I move bass volume or gain knob past middle level… the ‘zzzzzz’ appears.

Microphone … I can crank everything to max…0 buzz. Using XLR.

So… planning on moving to balanced cables
Scarlett 2i2 to Subwoofer (sucky Logitech Z533): https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0C6DBW23D/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A26RYHAD7QPUW8&psc=1

Bass to Scarlett 2i2: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0CMPTW3FB/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A35Q8N1RRSI0MJ&th=1

Other bass to DAI would be: Cordial EM 3 FV elements – Thomann Ireland

Cheap-ish options to see if I can tackle noise… @howard you’re the genius here… think this might help? I have moved, recabled, moved speakers to a new power outlet

Also tried with 3 different cables… a 4 and a 3M of this one:

And a: Ernie Ball Instrument Cable Black EB6081 – Thomann Ireland

Moving away from PC, etc does help… but only reduced… I’ve even tried using acoustic panels (that I have) to cover window and front of PC… only helped in getting PC warmer

So yeah… my next option is going balanced… what do you think ?

PS: While the noise is annoying AF… it’s been fun and a learning opportunity!
PS2: Please don’t go out of your recovery to answer me… I have time!

You already checked with a notebook on battery and wifi instead of ethernet?

Yeah… tried pretty much everything… except moving to an isolation room

So: notebook => DAI => bass / head phone (not speakers)
No component connected to non-battery power in any way and still buzzing???!

Yep. I am starting to wonder if my office due to smart gadgets, lights, dehumidifier, Alexa, UPS, NAS… might be generating enough noise / interference to be picked up by pickups or cable(s).

Note: I didn’t have fan or dehumidifier running at the time of test. Only lights and PC on a different table were powered on. Only a slight improvement. That’s why I am considering more shielded / grounded cables.

If this happens also with a notebook, why not put notebook & DAI in a backpack, put your headphones on and start moving in&around / out of your house while playing your bass?
If this is something external, the humming should disappear in other rooms & outside.
If not it must be something in the DAI or bass (you have the same humming issue on PC and notebook, so that can be ruled out).

You will look like a ghost buster, but it will give you some indication of the issue…

Oh, and please make a video, if you do that

I recorded myself yesterday playing some stuff on yousician… just that made me nervous… missing on basic stuff… so… “Ghostbusting” videos around the house will never happen

I get it! Recorded a love song cover where the lyrics included a vacuum cleaner. So I put a vacuum cleaner - dressed very “sexy” - next to me while playing.

My girld friend told me to delete it

That she is. Maybe she was also a little jealous of the vacuum cleaner ^^

You cannot use a balanced cable from the bass to the DAI; it won’t do anything and if the bass has a preamp it depends on continuity in the ring area for its on switch.

Balanced cables only work for balanced connections.

This is almost assuredly external RF noise, I would keep trying to track it down. The fact that it changes at all when you move is a dead giveaway.
