Or just start turning stuff off. try computers first, lights (dimmer switches can contribute), wifi access points, and microwaves.

Literally this.

If I am playing I don’t hear it… and I never noticed it in reaper.

Pretty sure T1s are absorbing noise from somewhere.

From Amp… nothing.

I get the exact same buzz on my setup when my bass isn’t hooked up and the cable is laying on the floor.

Bass - Zoom - Focusrite Solo - PC.

Headphones into Solo. Use the Fender Pro series cable (the soft rubbery ones that don’t kink)

Plug in bass and it goes to minimal but I can still hear it until I start playing.
Hold cable up off floor and it is almost minimal.

Not sure if that helps any or not.

I don’t leave my cables plugged… and non used audio inputs / outputs are at a minimum.

On headphones, buzzing also seems lower… but its there.
Anyhow… mysteries.

For example… now with bass on max, focusrite on middle… noise is minimal… moving mouse noise appears… I am literally going bananas with this!

is it a wireless mouse? Could be RF interference from the mouse, could be from the PC

Seriously, turn everything off except the bass, interface, and monitor speakers.

Everything.

Ok… FFS… lots of investigating.

  • Fully powering down screens (button, not sleep only), helps.
  • Fully turning off PC and moving to a different laptop(Alienware m17 R5) I have for my coaching work, 0 buzzing… but only if I use a USB3.0 interface - 2.0 had noise, which is weird because in 2i2 is 2.0.
  • Connecting to Linux PC(old) just for power also works.

It really boils down to my desk area / certain laptops. (Corporate dell, same noise)

Anyhow… if I ever need to record something, now I know I have to use the other laptop… or find a way to identify source of interference in my PC / desk.

It is a 24c CPU with tons of Cooling / fans. LEDs are all powered off(well… all that I can power off) I am tempted to try and use the back USB3.0 ports instead of only the front 3.0 on PC, but cable is too short :expressionless:

EDIT: Remembered my bedroom charger is USBA to USBC. Buzzing reduced a bit. Yeah… PC problems. GRRRR

It’s probably RFI leaking from the case. My PC has a plexi side and it is leaky AF. I never use it for music any more, just my mac (dead silent).

Note that if the RFI is strong enough, nothing about the bass - shielding, pickups, grounding - nothing matters. I have had it audible in humbuckers on a well shielded and grounded bass.

And from the noise it might be mimicking the GPU (6800XT)… although fans on it only trigger at 60 degrees… and it’s at 40 atm.

Maybe if I record something, I have to use the Alienware.

Anyhow… thanks for your patience!

An email to send tomorrow…

Bad usb ports can also be the issue. Did you tried different ports?

Edit: nevermind I already see you bought something. Hope it solves your problem!

I’ve tried multiple USB ports… and multiple cables… USBA-USBC; USBC-USBC, different instuments, etc.

I didn’t buy anything… just emailing these iFi guys, as it’s 170€ that I don’t know if it will be the solution. Since they have an entire company dedicated to RF noise… hopefully they can help.

Small update on this… after more rearrangements and recablings, noise reduced a little bit.

In the meantime I have reached out to a company called ifi-audio, that make a product called iDefender, that is basically a ground loop isolator / killer.

They will let me do a test run of the device to see if it solves my issue.
I will post an extended review here and in the focusrite sub on reddit… to hopefully be able to help people with similar problems!

Will keep you posted!

Yay. Problem found.

Now getting a device to effectively see it it sorts my issue.

ifi Defender+ and iPower2.

They will let me test and I can ask for refund if they don’t work.

Ok… the devices arrived.

Just scrambled 3 quick audios for a very quick test.

No iDefender+. Focusrite direct to PC - Distant from PC.

iDefender+ Powered - Cutting Ground loops - Sitting at PC

iDefender+ Not powered - Passthrough - Distant from PC

All files as embedding not working properly.

Basically just an audio test… to try and see differences.

Let me know what you hear.

EDIT: Added soundcloud links.

Maybe upload it to a format we can click on? i.e soundcloud?

My “main” soundcloud account was full.

Created a new one… but still they don’t appear as play buttons.

I’ll find a way.

Here’s an example of a SoundCloud link Josh posted that appears as a playable “button”:

https://soundcloud.com/bass_buzz/daily-mistakes-exercise

When I click one of the links you posted, it takes me to the SoundCloud app. Maybe you’re not using the correct link format?

Will check later at home.

I dont remember seeing a link like that on the share options but will check again!

Thanks
