The best knobs go to 11
So, the hardware of the SSL 12 is similar to the SSL2 Plus. No need to have the MK2?
With the software routing stufff, the SSL 12 seems to be a good choice then!?!?!?

Big beautiful knob goes to 11; nothing else matters.
You make me blush, @howard
not that knob
The SSL 12 sounds already good, I have to admit!
Ok, the SLL 360 Software is really cool!
It looks like this:
This is the interface to the DAI, not a DAW. Oh so many thingies to play with…
Very cool!
Obviously I haven’t used it a lot, like 15 minutes now, but:
Latency is very good, audio quality is excellent. It is likely subjective, but I find the audio quality better than the Motu M4. Maybe cause I could set a proper ASIO config, without distortions??!
So far: very happy!
Congratulations! It’s one of the better consumer-grade DAIs out there.
My prediction: this might not last too long (and it’s not the SSLs fault)
Could you elaborate?
The only thing that really keeps me awake (as of now) is the fact that there will be a MK2 soon!?
I have one month to send it back - any input about disadvantages are very appreciated!
Well, if this is about me: it’s not something I want to mod, so no conflicts with carpenters etc.
That’s exactly it. I was trying to make a tongue-in-cheek remark about your personality, how seemingly easily you are “swayed” and constantly doubting your own decisions…
That DAI is awesome - I would stop wondering about what potentially couldn’t work and just use it; even when someone remarks that by soldering custom-made ASICs on its motherboard, the sound quality will even be better!
(See what I did there!?! )
I doubt, therefore I am!
I’m WHYING Dutchman, not KNOW-EVERYTHING-FOR-SURE Dutchman, after all
Sooo … I could solder a custom-made ASIC on the motherboard? Can I use a Dremel and some car warp for that … or do I need some power tooly router!!! ^^
I have some ASICs here - might be the wrong size though
You’d first need to make your own solder; mostly from old strings (!) and elephant dung… I am sure there is 1-50 YT videos on that to be found
I have old strings … but I’m not touching an elephant dong, no sir!
You can tell it’s a Friday evening. Guess I’m going to have to watch the new King Dong movie.
I just learned, there is an old one!
I was really curious about a new version
I have a knob related question, maybe you know the answer?
On 45g generation FocusRite all dial knobs on the device itself are “infinite” … and always correspond with the state of the control software - which is great!
Not on the SSL 12 though.
The dial knobs for gain are potentiometers with a defined value.
In parallel, I can set gain on the SSL 360 software (circled in orange below).
Unfortunately both values are not synched, changing the level on the device does not change it in the software - and the other was around.
So, I would like to use profiles for every bass, which allows me to set gain for each individual bass once and then just load the matching profile.
This will not work as soon as I change gain on the device.
Question: would you set gain on the SSL 12 to max (10) and jst lower the gain on the software to always have a software defined gain?
The non-mathcing state of hardware and software is quite a weak point in my opinion!
SSL 12
Close up
I would personally just set the gain using the knob to somewhere around -8dB and then just normalize in the daw.
This is dependend on the instrument.
Again, I would like to do everything in software and use profiles for each instrument.
But that conflicts with the physical knobs!
This is much more elegant with FocusRite…
I think you should return it and get a Focusrite.
Maybe I’ll get some power tools and mod the SSL 12, so it works perfectly slight_smile:
The FocusRite control software looks great … but it cannot set output to mono, as far as I can see it.That’s a big no-no for me!
I can live with the workaround of setting the physical dials to max and than lower the gain in software. Need to test though…
