I know it’s the 80’s kid in me, but I love ripping the opening to GnR’s “Sweet Child O’ Mine”. It’s hackneyed but awesome. My brother can do the rhythm bit on the guitar now so we’re starting to sound like we know what we’re doing. I do do the Billie Jean bass line too. I just drop the opening F# an octave to the 2nd fret of the E string. It sounds deeper and the contrast is nicer with the bars that start on the G string too. Some Bob Marley (Stir It Up, I Shot the Sherriff, etc.) and throw in some songs that you’re working on (I’m still building a play library; it’s helping with my technique so that’s a plus, and it’s fun practice). For some reason I enjoy playing “Beds Are Burning” by Midnight Oil; it’s easy so there’s no pressure and it’s catchy. The Beverly Hills Cop theme is recognizable and a lot of Hip Hop/Rap bass lines (Tupac, Biggie, anything from Chronic 2001, “I Got 5 On It”, etc.) are nice because you can just play it on a phone or speaker and then people will like the extra bass. I need to get better at funk and slap because I want to play that too but for now Larry Graham and Bootsy Collins aren’t unlockable characters. I need more experience points. Ha ha.
