Women on Bass

I love Nik.
She’s got an online course I was really hopeful for, but her free intro stuff really put me off, and most of it looked pretty basic.
But if I had it my way, she’d be my int/adv funk teacher.

Oh yeah, she killed it.
I did not expect that growl out of her.
I looked on the YT channel, and she does the same on other songs, so must be her voice. She kicks ass.

Don’t know if anyone is following this story, but…

Going to be hopeful for her recovery.

I didn’t know it’s a thing as I don’t really follow the band (or any band tbh, even bands I do listen to lol), but that’s great news!

I’ll add a Montreal (Quebec, Canada) singer-songwriter and bassist to the list : Marie-Pierre Arthur. In interview, she explain that, in the little village in Gaspésie where she grew up, to see a girl playing bass wasn’t unusual because all the guys wanted to play guitar (to shred solos) or drums :woman_shrugging:, leaving bass to girls who filled that part in bands. She fell in love with the instrument and, before having a solo career, she accompanied a lot of Quebec musicians on bass and back-vocals.

She is not the most impressive bass player, but her groove and her singing inspire me! Maybe some others will like it too, even if she sings in french!

@Regina, the place of women here and in music seems to interest you. I suggest that you take a look at the interviews made by the Women of Rock oral history project.

Their goal is to interview female musicians who had a role in this genre of music but are quasi excluded of rock history. Interviews are really formal because it is part of a study, but you’ll find very unique and long interviews with drummers Viola Smith and Ginger Bianco, for example. There is also interviews with female bassist like Gail Anne Dorsey, Kira Roessler and Melissa Auf der Maur.

Hope you will enjoy!

Jennifer Burnes of the Mermen. Total badass on bass. I spent years with them when I lived in San Francisco.

Does anybody know how to pronounce Julia from juliaplaysgroove’s last name?

How is it spelled? Didn’t see it on her channel.

Cool that she uses a Zoom B3.

Adding Becky Baldwin to the list. She plays in several bands I think, but right now she´s touring with Fury. I saw them a few weeks ago, they were great!

Oh man, I have too many. These are a few that I have not seen here yet

Mohini Dey (this is one of my favorite song, more restrain and subtle from her)

Marta, this is the best original bass cover on YouTube

Esperanza Spaulding. I want to grow up to be like her.

I would have posted Tal Wilkenfeld famous bass solo with Jeff Beck but poor girl couldn’t afford a proper out fit, lol

Enjoy
