Any dog veterinarian in the house?

Just took the mom (puppy) to the emergency Vet. It appears that she has milk fever and needs some urgent care.

Over the phone I was told that

emergency exam is $130
Blood work $300 and
Recommended xrays is $500

I understand the first 2 but X-rays do I really need one for puppy with milk fever? It’s basically low blood calcium.

We are still waiting.

Thanks for any advice I can get.

Best of luck with everything, brother.

Thanks @MikeC.

If this happens 6 hours earlier it would have been… manageable as her regular Vet would have all the records.

Good luck man. All I got is good wishes

Asta sends her well-wishes :dog:

FWIW, low calcium might affect the bones (if the dog is young and/or has had the condition undetected for a while), and so, yes, an X-ray may be warranted to detect “structural” damage (microcracks) in the bones etc.

Good luck!!

Thanks @joergkutter
It’s actually low Blood calcium. It’s eclampsia, or Milk Fever. It can be pretty serious. It’s common enough in a small breed mom 2-4 weeks after delivery. It was critically low on my Luna, so they are keeping her overnight. It gets expensive quickly.

It turned out I didn’t need the bloodwork or X-ray they got me for an Overnight stay, 3 x blood calcium tests, 2 units of IV, catheter. I paid the MSRP of the Yamaha BBp34 tonight, and I’ll deal with my regular Vet on Monday for another brand new Bass equivalent then, :joy:

So true when it comes to pets. But, then again, we would do anything for them, wouldn’t we!?!

Best of luck @Al1885.
My cousin is a vet… more focused on horses and exotic, but let me know if you need anything and I can ask him.

Oh yeah… Last year my smaller dog - a rescue - broke his hind femur. … over 5000€
This year… one vet told us that he suspects our giant breed - Estrela Mountain dog - has hip dysplasia… that about a 5k surgery per side.

Dang, sorry Al. Emergency vets are a scam IMO. They know you have nowhere else to go and will almost always charge you for things your pet doesn’t need. I have been charged for care that wasn’t even administered to my animals. Emergency vets are a place I will only go if my pets are actively dying.

I also breed dogs (long haired cream miniature dachshunds). Always safest to go to the vet for me. Good luck!

Yeah my first puppy (20 years ago) had seizures, it freaked us out it was a weekday just after 5 pm, so we had to go to emergency vet. They took all kind of tests and sent her home with $50 tube of sugar. I paid $600 for those test back then.

Well it’s the price we paid, :joy: You know it’s funny, right before we paid, they asked if I want them to perform CPR in case of anything were to happen. My wife said no, I was not as fast thinking as she, I said why not? He then said ok there are some cost associated with that, I asked how much, he said he couldn’t tell and started listing a very long list of procedures that would probably buy a Fodera. I caught on and said DNR, :joy:

I have had so many horrible experiences with emergency vets. It’s scary when you think your pet is in trouble and when you’re panicking you’re usually not thinking clearly.

Once I had come home late from work, and I opened my door to what looked like a murder scene. Blood was everywhere! All over the floor, walls, even the ceiling! Turns out one of my dogs had cut his ear somehow while I was gone and had been shaking his head all day so his face and fur were crusted with blood and his ear was still bleeding. I was so freaked out I rushed him into the only available emergency vet. I was expecting them to cauterize the ear or maybe stitch it up.

Well they completely sedated him (unnecessary), cleaned his ear and waited for it to stop bleeding. Didn’t cauterize it, didn’t stitch it, didn’t even put a damn cone on him to prevent him from scratching at it. $800

That was the last time I went to an emergency vet

What a bummer! We have a great emergency vet near us, but I have also been to some really bad ones!

Just took Luna to her regular doctor this morning ( still here)

Dr said something that didn’t sit right with me when she was giving me the choices of hospitalizations and treatments. She said you’ve already invested on the puppy and she pointed to my $5000 Luna. That her treatment will be multiple days hospitalized 24 hours cars ranging from $6000-9000

I just declined the treatments, I’ll be signing a bunch of paperwork saying I’m aware that my dog can die, but staying here is also not guaranteed, they made
That clear several times.

If it was more sincere, I’d give it more than a few seconds of thought. This was the same doctor that suggested a cremation service ($600) for my other puppy so I would feel better. I gotta find a better vet.

This is why I’ve chosen basses over animals… they don’t die when i go a year between string changes and i never have to rush home to let them out

Every time i see a friend post “just got a $1500 vet bill because my dog ate something”, I’m happy with my choice lol

I have an old cat (17 years old) and this is my absolute last pet. I love animals but that’s just too much. Not only money, just the investment in general.

Still love this ol’cat.

Looks like a pretty sweet, chill cat!

Some cats are awesome, i have a couple of friends who have really neat cats! 1 of the 4 cats we’ve had was cool and it wasn’t the one that lived to 20  I’m not a big cat person, if I wanted to share my house with someone who eats my food and barely tolerates me then i’d get a girlfriend  but every time I see an oriental shorthair cat, I’m tempted

I totally agree with what you said, they are a huge investment and eventually it just feels like too much. My parents were smart, the only pets we ever got to have were some goldfish and a couple of gerbils

I found that having a small human was much easier than a pet, they eventually learn a lot more, they make some really neat observations about the world and you can usually leave them in the car without people freaking out
