Any sexy new basses you've got your eye on?

Why would anybody pay $14k for a bass that only looks like Lynnot’s? For that money I’d expect at least one of his own practice basses.

Surely you could go to a master luthier and have a custom bass built to his spec for less?

It’s the Cult of Fender.

This is the company whose deep down hardcore fans pay the Fender custom shop extra money to beat the crap out of their beautiful new guitars so they look super sh*tty and trashed, because so many of the ones from the guitar hero era do.

You just can’t explain it.

I’m not gonna harsh on anyone’s aesthetic preferences. You like that look? Cool. I can see that, a cool roadworn vibe, neat. But paying a substantial amount of money to the custom shop to have them do that for you? To a nice new guitar? I just don’t get it.

I mean, I am perfectly capable of destroying my own things

It’s not hard to take sandpaper, wire wool/brush, or hammer to something, so paying for your new guitar to look like it’s had a life that you haven’t given it is just a case of “style over substance”.

What next; paying somebody else to play it to save you the effort of learning?

The part I found funniest was they make up a fake history story of the thing for you while beating the crap out of it.

Seriously? Oh dear.

I’ll never be on the road, and I prefer my toys to stay in good condition, so my instruments will never get that look through use, but I wouldn’t be averse to owning somebody else’s tatty kit (preferably with some stories to boot) - I just wouldn’t buy something new with a fake history. What’s the point?

Hey, @howard, @PeteP, and @santino

I agree completely! Reminds me of paying extra money for “pre-washed” or “stone washed” jeans so they look faded and worn even before you wear them . . .

One time, while browsing for jeans in the store, I actually found a pumice rock about the size of a golf ball in one of the pockets. Apparently they were used to make small holes in the denim to give it that “aged” look.

Spending extra money to buy worn out jeans . . . ridiculous!

Same goes for bass guitars . . .

Yeah, @howard, I heard the Fender “relication” department is hiring

That’s funny, relic-things are much more accepted in the world of guitar players. That said I find it’s a bit ridiculous. Another thing is that the artificial relic work doesn’t look very realistic to me, even knowing it depends of the laquer type. I compare to my beloved #1 guitar, a Fender Telecaster with a long rock’n’roll history. I’ve done many concerts with this thing and I must admit I’ve not been very kind with it. The fact is, the worn paint doesn’t look much like artificial relic guitars and basses.

some pictures for illustration purpose :

I guess this Tele must be in the “heavy relic” category. By the way my green Precision Bass starts to be seriously worn too (but nowhere near the state of the Tele) and again it doesn’t look much like an artificial reliced instrument.

Ahh sweet, that’s an ESP. F-series, I think.

ESP makes amazing guitars.

@joergkutter,

Is that the one your friend is thinking about getting? . . .

Looks very interesting, and is certainly not from the well-known large brands

Cheers, Joe

Haha, no, @Jazzbass19, my “friend” is really more into classic (and classy) looking basses! Maybe if he were more into post-industrial Chernobyl metal, and if he discovered that his rich overseas uncle had suddenly passed away and left him a minor fortune, he might consider the Russian bass :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes::money_mouth_face:

I was hopeful and did some searching and I couldn’t find anything on ‘post-industrial Chernobyl metal’. :slightly_frowning_face:
