Metallica. I dig it. But it’s early morning here in France, so I sang along with it as Exit Sandman. ![]()
EDIT: I hope you don’t mind me adding this excellent video cover by Просто Прохожий (Just a Passerby).
That sounded awesome Barney! Was there a separate sound person or did you guys set it up?
Thanks @JerryP The venue had a sound guy. We split our XLR at source so he gets the instrument feeds (a bunch of labeled XLR ends) and mixes accordingly. The other half go into our digital mixer.
We all have IEMs and then make our mixes. There’s software on your phone that you use to control your own IEM mix. It’s pretty slick. So the FOH sound If you were at the venue would be less drum and more bass / guitar.
My own IEM mix would have my bass higher in it.
It works well because we eliminate stage monitors which inevitably cause feedback to the stage mics and the horrible high pitched feedback noises
It’s been a game changer for me because of my hearing loss. I can turn up my IEMs without affecting the FOH mix.
There’s a USB port on the mixer. And we recorded into a laptop from that.
A huge learning curve / expense but worth it.
It all came together and worked out well!
She Sells Sanctuary is in our setlist too, Along with Rain and Fire Woman.
I like the Cult, usually all DCG but sometimes a bit of timing to play with
Thinking this morning about what @DarthTim said about wanting to learn more theory to improve his playing.
That’s not wrong by any means, but you can get by for a metric ton of songs with just root notes and some solid timing.
Theory is just language to talk to other musicians; but feel / groove / timing that’s for me where the work pays off. Punters don’t notice your fills, but they know when your timing sucks.
3 more gigs coming up and I always love playing this one to open with. Pretty much root notes with a walk up into the second bar. That’s as complicated as it gets for this song.

If you’re looking for the next step after B2B then I think Mark Smith’s Groove trainer makes the most sense for a lot of beginners.
Agreed, the Groove Trainer course is a good one.
I appreciate it. I understand that you don’t need a whole lot of theory to play and I understand the basics of roots and fifths, but at this point I would need an actual musician to tell me what the chord we are in to know what the root is. Lol
I want to grow beyond muscle memory and being a guy that memorizes tabs. At this point I would say “I play a little bass” but I wouldn’t dare call myself a musician. I wouldn’t mind being a musician one day.
In that case @DarthTim I’d say learning more songs is going to be helpful.
Just learn a load of simple songs (that you like) that are easy wins.
For example, you can learn this in a day.
Learning them helps you understand the structure and then after a while you realize ‘Oh that structure is the same as that other thing’. Once you have root notes down and the major / minor arpeggios you know the same as / more than Gene Simmons.
There aren’t that many notes to choose from really.
Oh and if you don’t already; practice with a drum app / pedal. It’ll change your life for the better.

I mean… he’s not wrong
The Cops rocked up and issued a ticket for not being invited ![]()
Incorrect, unless you know how to sell coffins, condoms and cruises with your name on them.
Like who would ordinarily go on a Gene Simmons cruise, and why would you want to be stuck on a boat with them. That’s gotta be some powerful marketing.
I would absolutely love to come see you … if you didn’t live 2 icebergs over from Superman’s hidden ice palace
I run the social accounts for our cover band. It’s a PIA and I’d rather not do it. BUT…we’ve just got not one but two gigs booked solely off people watching/listening to our songs on FB, Insta and YouTube.
We record our gigs via our digital mixer onto a laptop DAW, then mix it down later.
So it works and it’s free promo. I just knock up a short video in Imovie and post it.
Yes you probably are. Get out of the house, play with other musicians; it’s fun.
Thanks @Barney! Package received!
