I moved away from Chicago in '04 and haven’t seen her live since. Shame. Early on, I ran into her a few times at the Jazz Record Mart when she was hand-delivering her first CD “Split”. The JRM was a short walk from my condo in LPT. I spent a LOT of time and a LOT of money there. It was a treasure. Nothing else like it anywhere in the greater Chicago area. Sadly, but not surprisingly, they closed in March 2016. :sob:

This evening I was listening to Art Blakey , I was going to transcribe “Moanin” but got caught up in his drumming especially "Hank’s Symphony.

Blakey was magic - a super talent

I’ve got “Night in Tunisia” playing in my head now. Thanks!

He played a lot with Miles and shared one of his talents…mentoring new, young musicians. Lots of them! Like John Mayall in the blues.

I agree! Blakey is a killer.

But please copy and paste a YouTube link to the jazz tunes you recommend so everyone reading this thread can easily enjoy the music. :grinning:

That’s what I created this thread for. :+1:

Yo S,
Here’s the quick story…
I was around 3 or 4 weeks into (attacking) playing the bass and on Rich’s 3rd lesson.
I live in a small town rural place.
I’m driving in a hick town, on a side road and I see a guy who I instantly knew was Rich.
One hour before I was doing his lesson.
I did an immediate u turn and asked if I could ask him a question, he thought I looking for directions and I asked, ‘Do you play bass?’
Hahaha, I jumped out of the vehicle and had around 10 - 15 minute talk.
Jeeze was I hoping he lived here but he had a gig the night before in a place that might max out at 60-70 people.

That’s awesome, thanks for sharing that! I’m not one to fanboi over anyone but Rich is so nice and humble and he always replies to comments on his videos so it would have been really cool to meet him. He has some great videos on YT, i really liked is lesson on modes. (as much as I could like any lesson on modes :joy:)

100% genuine nice guy…
I told him I’m a big Geddy fan and said to him, meeting you is like meeting Geddy.
Of course he laughed…
