GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 2)

My wife is an amazing lady! Loving the lack of cables.

Yeah Yamaha doesn’t really have much beyond the BB73xA. next it’s the same but Made in Japan the BBPxx then the Artist series.

I agree the BB300 especially MIJ is a steal.

Yeah. There are:

BBP34 (MIJ version of the BB734A, passive only, otherwise the same)
BBPH (Peter Hook’s signature BB, based on the 734A)
BBNE2 (Nathan East signature)
TRB JP-II (John Pattucci signature TRB)
Attitude (Billy Sheehan signature one-off)

and… that’s it that I know of.

They do make these to order for artists too. Jack Bates has 11 BB734A’s and I have seen him with several different colors (white, etc) that you cannot buy.

Exactly, the price goes from $800 to $1800 then $3000+
But under $800 Yamaha has several models at $100 increment.

Yeah a lot of people consider the 734A to be the actual top of the line. It’s the most versatile and the quality gains from the BBP over it are relatively small - they exist but they don’t feel like twice the bass.

Except those colors are pretty amazing, two different blues and both are gorgeous. Jealous of Jerry’s

Really good options, yeah. The BB434 is a great bass and the TRBX604 and 504 are really great takes on Ibanez SR-style instruments; I loved by TRBX.

They are seriously great basses. That’s a traditional color too, you should get it

Already did!

It has Hipshots and apparently a Fender bridge. Case queen that looks to be immaculate, under $400.

SUATMM!

Yes. The BB434 is actually the exactly replica of the BBP34 just different country of origin. That makes the BB734A more superior in terms of electronics.

Awesome @fennario! BB’s are fantastic.

Agree, mine’s black and I’ll be jealous of you for finding one in that red. They really are great P basses.

How can you tell if one made in Japan vs Taiwan? I don’t see any marking.

I’m going to upgrade mine now that I’ve got the 734. The pickups are great but mine are 40 years old at this point. Besides that, I’d like a better bridge and am undecided on the tuners. It’s my heaviest bass but with a decent strap, there isn’t really any neck dive.

Note that the Taiwan instruments are fantastic too. All SBV’s were made there, for example, and those have been my two best made instruments.

I kind of wish Yamaha still used that factory; Indonesia is great but those Taiwan made instruments were up there with MIJ.

Loooool I put that one on my watch list earlier today.

Doh! Sorry man! It stood out from the crowd available on Reverb and wasn’t even the most expensive one. Listed fairly recently. I couldn’t pass it up.

Don’t be sorry, you did me a favor! I absolutely don’t need it, I just have thoughts of keeping a p bass with flats around every once in a while even though I don’t know when I’d ever play it.

I have decided to set my next bass sights on a vintage Gibson Ripper. Black. Must have all original working electronics.

I think I’ve gotten to the point of having so many basses I want super oddballs. If anyone sees a good one listed (none on reverb that fit my criteria at the moment) let me know.

My next target is the Robert Smith signature bass VI. I am going to hold back though. Not ready for it. I want to be more comfortably proficient with a 4 string before I jump into playing chords on that 6. If I’m seriously shopping for it 12 months from now, I’ll consider that a win.
