GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 2)

Wipe some acetone on a rag across the finish.

If it leaves a huge horrible streak and lifts the finish. Yeah it’s nitro

Note - clearly do not do this.

Ok serious answer @fennario

Nitro spray finish will be softer than poly.

So find a spot on the bass out of sight and gently dig your fingernail into the finish. If you see a small indentation it’s probably nitro. Poly won’t indent with a finger nail.

Awesome man, I feel partially responsible for you picking this up so I’m glad you seem to like it so far. I have a hard time not recording all of my covers with my 300 because it just sounds good with everything. I just got a nice big Levy’s strap for mine but before that I had a Lekato on it since I got it. No neck dive and it is heavy but feels well balanced which makes it easier to stand and play. As far as maintenance, I use Music Nomad F One oil on the fretboard and their non wax guitar polish. I’m not sure what the finish is, but I haven’t had any bad reaction with those 2.

It is an entry level ‘production’ model I got from a boutique bass maker…barely a demo on the net for it so a bit of a dice roll, but really interesting lefties are not that common…I will post full pics and details etc. once I have it

Jackson X Series Spectra Bass IV. Anybody got experience with a painted neck (on a bass! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:) And can you recommend the seriesX? There are not many reviews on Ytube, which is a little worrying. Asking for a friend, I don’t need another bass

They feel the same as clear coated neck. It’s awesome but not for everyone. If you have sweaty fingers this may not work out, if you don’t like sticky neck, it’s a no too.

I have both satin smooth finish and clear finish neck on my basses of all price ranges. Smooth can feel fast and easier to slide your thumb up and down the neck but it can leads to finger fatigue. Glossy neck on the other hand can provide a great stability and anchor for those who can position their thumb precisely to support the fretting finger which requires very little pressure and promote stamina.

I like both, each type gives me different inspiration when I play.

Wearing gloves (I wear one on my fretting hand) goes a long way to addressing sticky/ sweaty issues

I see Scott from SBL always wearing a glove in his videos. I was wondering what the point was.

It’s a some kind of neurological medical condition. He’s not doing it for fun.

It’s a condition where his fingers tremble unless they are in constant contact with something (the glove, for instance).

I use one to provide some sort of support to my pinky (I have a Dupuytren contracture).

The glove also helps with reducing string noise.

Scott has Focal Dystonia in both hands … his fretting hand is the worst of the 2 … the contact of the glove with the skin of his hand keeps the tremors and twitches in check so he can play.

Similar to that Charles Barkley has with a golf swing. In golf it’s called a yip. You do something for so long and the synapse got corrupted under certain situations. Scott has the worse kind.

And its actually not a problem with the hands themselves … the problem is in the brain, and how the signals are going out to the muscles…

Thanks Al, I haven’t noticed any issue with either the varnish on my Lindo, or satin finish on the Ibanez.

Yes, but it is still the hands where it “costs”… His focal dystonia issue is the reason why he can’t play for very long, and thus hardly does gigs, and only finally recorded his own album last year. But those days preparing and recording in the studio apparently caused him to have to take a break of one to two weeks from bass playing afterwards, otherwise he’d be risking to completely mess up his hands/fingers.

It’s a shitty condition when you are trying to make a living playing bass.

That explains why that other dude is in so many of his recent videos. As much as I respect Scott, he has a bad habit of talking way too much. He’s a master at turning a 10 minute video lesson into 20 minutes. Now that he’s added the second dude who also talks way too much, I skip his new videos. I lack the patience (brain injury, American football, 1965).
