GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome (Part 2)

Sweetwater also sells acoustic instruments. This sticker is strictly a CYA tactic.

Not true, stop everything and send that to me and I’ll complete the process for you. I’ll send it back when it’s properly acclimated,.

When my keyboard arrived, and the temperature here was around 0-5C, I unpacked it and thought ā€œOoh, that feels very cold, I’ll leave it to warm up a bit before I plug it inā€. But I wouldn’t do the same with a guitar

Well, I had one bass where humidity started to condense on the metal parts, so I decided to wait a bit
But wait 24 hours? Nope

Hmm…if I do this, there’s a good chance that you get confused and send back something even better. But there’s also the chance you send back something less good.

I think I’ll pass. But thanks for the offer.

Analog keyboards this totally makes sense for - you would need to keep retuning them as they warmed up

Some models you need to let sit a minute after you turn them on, or they drift.

One of many reasons that I prefer digital.

If you’re a musician on the road, they pull the instruments out of the trailer, and you play them that night, and back into the trailer and on to the next stop.

I should ask Tank about it on one of his live streams (Tank is a bass technician and tour manager)

Come on, show us, the 24hrs is nearly up

W-a-a-a-i-t-i-n-g is the hardest unnecessary part :notes:

Just for that, I’m going to show everyone else but you.

I’m still at the office for another 75-ish minutes. Then I gotta get home and unbox and take pics and whatnot…

New preamp pedal.

The SGT-DI is up for sale.

Tried a Palmer Pocket preamp. It was OK I guess. Returned it and got the NUX Melvin Lee Davis.

Nice clean preamp with cab sim. Nothing flashy but sounds good on my headphones and DI out means I can go straight to our mixing desk at rehearsals.

Pedalboard is now:

Korg Pitchblack X tuner
Cali76 compressor
HX One multi effects
NUX preamp
Cioks power supply
Gator small pedalboard that includes a case.

(couldn’t verify the previous post so deleted for now)

In the '60s when I was still in HS we traveled all over Northern Wisconsin and the Michigan UP in some of the coldest weather I’ve ever experienced. Overnight temps were routinely well below zero and our gear rode in a trailer we pulled behind the car.

When we rolled up to our gig other than the time the gear sat while unloading and setting up there wasn’t time to let anything gradually warm to room temperature. The Fender gear we played was nitro finished and the amps were 100% tubes.

A nitro finish can experience checking in the finish because of this but no one cared then and today you pay extra for that when they relic something. We carried spare preamp and power tubes but I can’t recall any serious amp breakdowns either.

In the summer it was traveling through 80° plus heat with 80% humidity and it was much the same. Roll up, unload, set up, tune up, and play for 2-4 hours. There wasn’t time to wait or cool anything off either and it all road in a trailer.

Maybe we were just lucky or maybe it’s that back then Fender gear was considered indestructible (not so with VOX) but I can’t help but thinking the conditions in the back of a FedEx or UPS truck are no different than those in that old trailer.

The label is more or less a CYA to cover all contingencies because there may be some instances where you’d want something to warm up before playing it but for the most part unboxing it sooner isn’t gonna change much of anything. JMHO

Other than a bass and amp, I’ve not made any buys until now. So, this may be useful for the newer players out there looking to experiment with tones, effects, recording, and silent practice.

After much research and deliberation I have bought the Hotone Ampero One, priced at $299, but currently on sale at Sweetwater for $199, which seems like a good deal as the lowest I’ve seen used models is for around $170.

Awesome. Enjoy it. I have the Ampero Mini and paid more than that for mine. Good deal.

Just started playing (again, for the second time in my life) last year - I acquired two new basses, initially a TRBX305 with a Rumble 25 and a B1Four, then a Ray34. I also picked up a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and have been recording some. Last year was a very expensive hobby year for me, as I also acquired an Am Pro II Strat (before my gravitation towards bass) and a Spark40 amp … not to mention a fishing kayak and a bunch of other little fun stuff… sigh…
Anyway, I’m historically driven by the reward at the end of the journey… I bought the new amp as a reward for learning Fade to Black all the way through on guitar, bought the new Strat as a reward for learning Sultans of Swing… no one said these rewards were necessarily concordant with the challenges surmounted in order to obtain them lol
But, at the beginning of this year, I made myself a vague promise that I wouldn’t be acquiring any new gear in 2025 (you know, to show year over year improvement and subsequently not feel bad if I decide to go hog wild in 2026 :joy:)
Anyway, I’m crafting my way through B2B and deciding that, sure, a li’l somethin-somethin’ at the end of the course wouldn’t be a bad way to celebrate. I’m thinking I’ll cap the budget for such an incentive at ~$300. I’m entertaining the idea of a new budget bass, maybe a Harley Benton JB-75MN (since I’ve got a good deal of versatility within my current lineup, but still lacking the traditional J-bass).
But- also on my mind are a new DI - potentially a Tech21 SansAmp, or a new pedal like a Big Muff… sigh…
I’d love to get on stage at some point, perhaps starting with an open jam or two, maybe join a band, so I’d like to set myself up in a way that sort of helps prod me down that path. Guess by making this I’m seeking both therapeutic validation (ā€œAw BassyBunch, it’s ok to want new thingsā€) and a bit of guidance on which direction I should go with my next acquisition. WWYD?

I gotta hurry up and learn how to play so I can start spending money on new stuff!

I had an Ampero One, then upgraded to the Ampero. For the money, they are absolutely fantastic units. I use mine for silent practice, as a recording interface and in the live context.

On my last cover - posted today - I was using the octaver functionality to get the tone I wanted. Worked brilliantly!
